what size and what kind of trailer? If its a teardrop, mine just had cushion and you picked one up and leaned it against the front. Easy and done. My TTT is actually up off the floor and the frame slides into itself. It goes from 81"L x 47"w while open, and when slid closed as a couch its 30". I would need 2 mattresses 7" or 8" thick, one of which is 30" wide and the other 17" wide to convert from couch to bed without gaps in either position.

might take me a day or two but I'll try to nab some pics of the frame work on mine for ya when I can, unless someone jumps in first. Measurments for mine are in my first post.

I'd say that if you want a bed that folds into a couch....cook up your own dimensions on it. How wide do you want to make the bed? Then determine how wide you want a seat on it that is comfortable when it's a couch. The rest is the back. Build what you want for a frame. If you go a 5 wide bed (queen)...then you may need to double up on the back cushion bolster and put a double fold in it.

For me...when I built my standy, the foam and upholstery was too pricey for the Gaucho option...just made it a bed. I didn't plan on doing a lot of "entertaining" though. Check some of your home furniture for what's comfortable for you and build to suit. Doug

PS...or you could go down to the local RV dealer with a tape measure....

folding bed

Postby Boanerges4 » Sat Apr 16, 2011 8:02 am

Thanks so much for all the info. I realize I would basically have to use my measurements for the are I have, but my problem is the fold up part, how do you hinge it so it will go from a bed to a couch. Im more interested in the mechanical, not so much the measurements. :?

Futon

Postby danlott » Sat Apr 16, 2011 8:40 am

You can do a search for futon hardware kits on Yahoo or Google and come up with plans and hardware kits to make folding futons.

I am in the process of building a second teardrop with a standy profile but it is only 5 ft high. I put in a drop floor and used 2 rear sofa mechanisims from a Leisure Van I found at a junk yard. They face each other and when you fold them down they make a queen bed. Here are a few pics.

This is the profile.

My ttt has a dinette to bed conversion. Extremely simple to make.

1" dowels are put in place across the footwell, from seat base to seat base. Lower cushions (foam on plywood) slide to the center, resting on the dowels, and the back cushions just drop into the gap left at the wall.

No mechanical contraptions. Can get pictures if you want.

These are some foam options. You can also get some folding chairs and put them side by side for even more versatility

I'm with Reba....You could just use a sheet of ply that slides over the back portion. Cleats on the sides to support and a reinforced front edge. The cushions could have the hinge in them. Just separate pieces of foam with a covering stitched down. It allows one to fold back to back on the other. Simple and light weight. Storage is underneath the bed, accessed from an outside door. Yup...that's what I'm thinking...thing is for me..I'd much rather not have to make up a bed all the time, If I want to just sit...I got the dinette. I know of others that made up the gaucho option, but just leave it made as a bed as it's a nuisance to do and 1 mattress is much cheaper than doing up that many cushions. Mine doesn't fold up. I built it out to the drop floor and put 2 drawers under it. I do have more storage than if it folded up. Doug

I like the option of the couch though I'm with you and typically just leave it as a bed. Its nice to fold it up if I need to access something underneath from the cabinet door under it. (also have outside access)

If I had to build one from scratch and really wanted the couch bed setup, I'd probably just make it hinge over in the middle. Lift the cushions and hinge it over and reset the cushions.

Mine isn't fixed...it's a floating piece as my fuse box is under it. Tips and uses a stick to hold it up. That way I can find all the crap that moves around in the rear storage area and gets out of place.... Doug
