If spars were eliminated except for top and bottom, you could make as many ribs as you wanted with rib pattern.......just remove 3/4'' from bottom and top for extra ribs.

I think it might be easier to cut out the hatch before you spar it.
Then spar it and attach it. What do you guys think?

looks to me like not enough sugar for your dime...to my way of thinking building a hatch is not really a problem...use vertical spars and skin...voila your done...having to cut the side in the horizontal plane is just a pain...trace out your rear profile and cut the matching pieces with your jig saw...sand to finish or better yet, make a pattern and finish out with your router...4 vertical spars for a 4 footer 5 for a 5 footer at least 2in wide and you have no springback problems...not the only way to do it but it is what we did and it was simple, relatively quick and painless and it worked for us
