Anyone ever have a stove backfire?

I just re-did a 1965 213G this last week and took it camping with me this weekend. It didn't leak, but the darn thing did back fire a couple of times. Scared the living crap out of me! At first I heated a pot of water for tea, and shut off the valve. Went to the trailer to grab a cup and heard one loud whistle and bang. Thought to myself what the heck was that? A couple of hours later I fired it up and as I was walking away it backfired again and blew itself out. Now everytime I shut it off it backfires. Anyone ever have this happen to them?

You mean a 413G stove?

I have three of them, at least one ( maybe 2 ) is a 413G and never have had that happen to me. To me that would indicate fuel is leaking someplace it shouldn't be leaking to, that is my first guess. Are you sure the valve to the 2nd burner is closed?

I have learned those 413s take a very long time to burn themselves out after you shut off the fuel valve. Might be why so many of them have the paint burnt off the lid over the main burner.

I"ve had it happen on 425's when I believe I've overheated them. The fuel tanks were really warm and the manifold got super hot, the grate was turning a cherry red as well as the burner. I just thought it was because the fuel combusted before it hit the burner and blew the flame out. Never had one whistle though...maybe that's it's built in safety feature! Maybe you have loosened some crud in the gennie. I've redone a number of them and then after running them through a series of heat/cool cycles...it dumped a load of stuff out of the gennie. Doug

I am going to clean the gennie again, and check to make sure that the valve shuts off tight. I did flip the spring around in the genny because it was all carboned up. I did have the plates red hot. And I probably could have spent more time cleaning them up.

a little overnight soaking in vinegar or naval Jelly will usually clean the spring up - also if you have a small wire brush, run it down the tube as well - with the tip off of course. One other thing - I have notices that not all tanks are the same and the orifice hole on the main burner can be different sizes as well - the generator going too far - or not far enough into the burner - is it possible that you have a miss match?
