Side wall notch for hatch

Postby jtsarby » Mon May 02, 2011 6:58 pm

I am ready to build the hatch. If my hatch thickness is 1.25" thick I would assume the notch in the sidewall would need to be around 1.5" to account for the weather stripping. If I make the notch the same thickness as the hatch I would need to buy the offset hurricane hinge to allow for the weatherstripping. Does is sound correct? I would prefer the offset due to the lower cost anyway. I am building a weekender.

I guess I am having a hard time visualizing a 1.5" notch. The mockup I did used much thinner OSB. Furthermore, If I made it thicker than the outside skin, I let the thick part grow inwards, toward the galley. And I left about 1/4" gap between the rib and the wall. See the last picture below...

In the photos of the other build you have the framing overlap the sidewall. At that point you had not skinned the hatch. It looks like you used 1x lumber which is 3/4" thick. I am using the same. Once I skin the hatch, sandwich the framing, it will be 1.25 thick. ( 3/4" lumber with 1/4" ply on top and bottom). What depth will I need to cut the notch? I assume 1.5" with the better than hurricane hinge and 1.25 with the offset.

Ok I did not see the third pic at first. If you skinned the ribs how deep do you make the notch?

Okay, if you are skinning both the inside and the outside with 1/4" plywood, then you would make the notch 1 1/4" plus 1/2 the thickness of the weatherstripping.

I would not skin the ribs.

Ok I think I get it. If I use the offset hinge I subtract the 1/4" offset from the notch.

2 of the 4 ribs installed... The ribs would later be removed, and installed over the 1/4" skin.

I didn't use an offset hinge. Someone else would have to chip in on that.

Here's what I used...

Li'l Bear Teardrop Hinges, Moldings & Seals

"Better-Than-Hurricane" Leakproof Galley Lid Hinge

* 2-piece Extruded Aluminum - mill finish!
* Lower Profile Crown
* Tighter "Nesting Pocket" Within the Crown (less slop/play)
* NO Lid-to-Roof Offset!
