Where to mount a brake controller in a Jeep

Postby dh » Tue May 03, 2011 5:53 pm

Can't find a spot that I can easily to without compromising knee room or interfearing with the shifter (manual). The best place I came up with was on top of the dash. Where did anybody else put thiers?

I have a Wrangler. Mine is located on the lower part of the dash toward the passenger side. I have an automatic but it still should not be in the way. If you have a different Jeep, maybe some one else will chime in.

Do you have a pic? If you put it where I think you did, I'd have to monkey around the shifter to adjust brake power and hit the manual override button.

It really does not need to be readily accessible unless you use trailer brake override a lot ... Most time its usually a set once and forget it...

I have 2002 Wrangler X and if it were me, I would put on side of console (mounted vertically) forward of FWD selector lever that way it would be accessible but in a space where its not in the way...

I have a Cherokee but I put the brake controller on the pillar just on top of the dash on the drivers side, that way it,s not taking up any usable space and is very easy to hit the manual overide if needed.

Mounting Options

Postby Engineer Guy » Tue May 03, 2011 10:31 pm

In advance, pardon my ignorance. I don't have a Jeep.

I've done 2 installs under the Dash, left side. In the current one [Montero Sport], I set the Controller forward toward the Firewall, with the Display and Adjustment Knob 'just' accessible. It's horizontal. No Knee conflict. Once I set it for a given set of conditions, I don't touch it again during a tow. It follows Brake Pedal force.

In a prior install, I mounted the Controller in the same, left position. I tilted it up at a 45 degree angle. To the best of my knowledge, being all-electronic these days, a Controller could mount totally vertical.

Hugh, any problems cooking the controller on the dash? I fried a cell phone on the dash once, but the GPS lives there happily.

Engineer Guy, Thats where I'm used to mounting them, and thats where I put it on my F-150, which is headed for the retirement home. Jeeps are a lot like teardrops on the inside, 10lbs of crap in a 5lb can. The contrller in the F-150 is actuly a pendulm moddle from 1988 and is getting retired as well. It likes to kick in while going up hills. Its going to Shady Pines with the truck.

No problems with it getting fried, I assume you mean by it sitting in the sun. Mines an electronic unit also so does not have to be mounted level, which was important since I sometimes tow my trailer to rough places. I do live a whole further north than you though and while we have summer it,s usually only 3 or 4 months long and prob not as hot as where you live. I,ve got a Jeep club meeting tonight so if I think of I will get a picture.

I mounted mine in my F150 on the fuse box cover low on the left side.

I worried about getting to the brake lever on the box in case of an emergency situation

but I'm so old and move so slow I would be in the ditch before I could apply the trailer brakes anyway.

so it sits all nice an comfy mounted on the fuse box just dareing me to use it.

I hope you find a spot the new ones are a lot better.
