Wives and TD's

I know there are a few ladies here who have built or are building TD's.

On my way home from my brother's today after listening to my SIL and her fear of anything new or different

I got to thinking, which can be a bad thing for me to do,

I wondered how many wives when told by their husbands that he wanted to build a TD really didn't warm up to the idea until after he was commited to building the TD.

I know my 89 year old aunt never liked camping until my uncle drove in with a class C motor home she wasn't 89 back then.

They ended up wearing out three class C's before he passed.

Today would have been my Mother's 100 th birthday hard to believe she has been gone 18 years. time flies even when you aren't having fun.

I am a backpacker. I am used to climbing mountain passes with 50 lbs on my back and not showering for a week.

My Wife is not.


Now you know why I am building a TTT with a toilet and a shower. She has no intention of traveling in it. So I am rellying on the finished product to convince her otherwise.

My wife said she would never go in that thing I was building until I finished it. She loves it now the only thing she does not love are the camp ground bath rooms. So I guess I am going to have to build a TTT so she can have her own potty!

It's not just women. Men are sometimes that way too. It's not just the teardrop or the size of the trailer either. Some people just prefer the dirt that they can't see from the dirt that they can. In other words, some people would rather brave the unseen bed bugs, dirty mattresses, bed covers, rugs, bathrooms, etc of a seemingly posh hotel room to the clean dirt and critters of the forest floor.

However, for me, sleeping in a tiny teardrop seemed like it would be claustrophobic. But, I have found that, with MyAway trailer's folding roof down, I get almost the same feeling as I would with a teardrop and it is not a problem. So, the solution may be to rent a teardrop for a vacation or bring your wife to a gathering where someone might allow her to actually get inside one and see how she feels then. Also, seeing what people build might actually make her change her mind about it all.

Until Gary and I got married 15 years ago, I had never camped in my life ... and now I am hooked for the rest of my life. I love our little camper and can't wait each month until our next camping outing. My first marriage we lived on a farm that many winters our water froze for weeks at a time .... so was used to bathing in water heated in a pan ... so the "luxury" of a camping shower is great! I love cooking .... and nothing beats cooking in a dutch oven or over a camp fire. So there are wives out there that love the TD/TTT experience. Trudy

Hey all...my situation reads just like StandUpGuy's post.

I wanted to build an offroad TD to serve as a base camp of sorts, but soon realized that camping in a trailer allows you bring more of the comforts of home.
My wife tops that list, but she's always been a non-camper so it's got to have standing headroom and a proper bed rather than a mummy bag.

I picked up an old tent trailer to introduce her to the idea without having to invest too much.
It was successful, so now I'm looking at doing something like a pop-top Compact design with a dropped floor after stripping the tent trailer down.

The weight has to be kept down because I'm pulling it a 4cyl truck, but it still has to be warm and cozy so the search for THE design continues. This summer we'll get out camping in the TT so she can see what she'd like in the one I want to start building in the fall.

I'm starting off slow and easing her into it gradually....and comfortably !

The appliances and windows for my first build came from a camper that went though a low drive-through.

NANCY liked the idea of no longer sleeping on the ground in a tent, she really liked the idea of the grasshopper design and having a water heater and radio and...
It takes no more effort to fix and clean up after a meal and we will have a potty/shower tent.

when Mike first told me about wanting to build a TD, I thought he was nuts. My first words to him were "YOU CAN BUILD ONE OF THOSE THINGS? ARE YOU SURE???" I was raised camping and fishing so I was not new to the idea of roughing it.


Anyway, my first husband HATED camping even though I forced the point a few times during the 20 yrs we were married.) I was so glad when Mike told me that he loved camping. SO, I was up for getting a trailer of some kind after Mike and I tent camped at Monarch Park, Colorado in July of 2007 and it was COLD COLD COLD in that dang tent.

My biggest fear during our build was that my husband is a perfectionist!!!

He did an awesome job! I love our little adventures in the CASHCOW. We have met some awesome people that we have grown to love dearly. Just wished we lived closer to them so that we could camp out more with them.........

I did say I knew their were women builders.

after spending a week this past summer in a motel first the worry of not know if the location is safe or that the motel is clean and the unpacking and packing it takes
I need a room on the ground floor and sometimes I have to struggle up a flight of stairs sorta takes the fun out of the trip
not to mention all of Sharon's list.

I don't know what lays ahead for me but I would like to convert a CT one day.

I'm one of those women. I came from a camping family. We had various TTs. DH's family went tent camping when he was very young, but not in later years.

After we married and had kids, he would go with us some. Now that the kids are mostly grown, it's just me on a solo run about fifty percent of the time.

The little woman is seeing the progress and is considering the idea that it is not stupid. This is a big step forward!

Ask the mister what would he like to go and see figure the cost of motels and the cost of camping maybe he will find a renewed interest.

I've heard that saying, except it involved a boat.

The mister isn't much on sightseeing. Actually, I think he would prefer motels. He likes his space, tv, etc. We've taken 2-week trips to FL throughout the years in a MH. Even then, we'd work in a motel in the middle for a day or two. It's kind of odd, too, because he's a hunter and fisherman. Can seem to spend countless hours on the river checking nets at different hours. I think it's the company, and involves many adult beverages...

The first TD we saw was a very small 4 by 8 foot trailer....very small. My wife hated the idea.

She later changed her mind when she saw a 5 by 8 foot TD that was better built and had more features. She changed her mind so much that she did about 55% of the building on our trailer.
