Baby Moons for a 49 Kampmaster

Postby bohemian » Thu Apr 14, 2011 4:26 pm

I have searched hi and low for a new pair of these Baby Moon hub caps with no luck.

Now I'm turning to the group to help out. :worship:

Any leads to where I can find a pair will be greatly appreciated.

The caps fit on a Firestone 16 x 4.00E 2-49 wheel 5 - 4.5 bolt pattern
with 5 retaining clips.

You've probably already contacted them, but if not, you see if Stockton Wheels, The Wheelsmith or Pete Paulsen (Paulsen Motorsports) have what you're looking for.

Wayne: send those to a restoration chrome place to be repaired and rechromed. I'm sure you already checked Coker Tire? Are those GM or Chrysler wheels? Bob

I agree. Any pitting can be filled before re-plating.

If you are looking for an era correct plating on these, they didn't have "chrome" back then. It was a bright nickel finish. Basically they just skip the last dipping process (don't remember what the last process we call "chrome" is).

A few years ago, I was surprised to see PepBoys carried baby moons in stock. Don't know if they still do if those would be acceptable to you. (?)

Thanks for all the help.
I'm waiting for Pete paulsen to call me back.
Stockton wheels is out of business.

Bob
I thought about having the caps rechromed.
The owner of the trailer even suggested it.
I thought the caps were in to rough a shape to be done and also would be overly expensive?
I will look into it though. Any suggestions.

Wayne check your local chromer and have them give you a quote. It might be high and maybe not as high as you think. I had desoto hood ornament I thought was crap done for $100 at a place in TN and it was BAD!

Baby moon update.
After two weeks three emails and five phone calls to Pete Paulsons house of wheels. :x
I found out today they do have the Baby moons I'm looking for.
Now if I can just find out how to get them to take my order.

I certainly hope they dont treat all their customers this way.

I called a dozen or so places Including hub cap Mikes and they all have Baby moons but they dont have the size I'm looking for.

I did find out today from Fletcher's vintage trailers that the three ringed Airstream baby moons fit the wheel I have. He also said good luck trying to find them.

I also emailed a few chrome restores and I got quotes like $125.00 a pice to have the work done. I cant see that happening.

Looks like I'll be repainting the old ones. And hope to find some good chrome ones in the near future.

Side note: Pete Paulsen house of wheels didn't call me back yesterday or today. Go figure

Welcome to the "wonderful world of Moons". Not all wheels are created equal. It's a tough challenge if you have an older wheel that you don't know who might have manufactured it. I've got some late 50's Mopars that would take a regular moon. Regular re-pops are made in about 3 sizes anymore....unfortunately...none fit these wheels. If you found something that fit the center, and the clips weren't correct...you could grind and relocate them. Just an idea. Good luck in your search....I'm going to opt for newer wheels. My nephew has a load of them. Doug

I finally got through to Pete Paulsen's world of wheels.
They said they have the moons that should fit that wheel.
If not I can mail them back??
I'm hoping that they will show up in a couple of days, And that there the correct fit.
Doug I'll keep in mind the prospect of relocating the clips. Or maybe I can just put them on with duct tape.
Plan B is I'll paint the moons that came with the trailer.

The baby moons came and they didn't fit. :(
I wasn't about to spend the money or the time to mail them back. Not to mention trying to find ones that do fit.
So I pulled the backs out of the old and new ones and with a little modification I was able to rivet the part of the old to part of the new and voila they fit like a glove.
