Wives and TD's

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

Postby WayneW » Wed May 04, 2011 3:28 pm

Pete, my wife sounds a little like yours. She does not like change a whole lot. However, she is very much a minimalist. When we were shopping for our first TT, she wouldn't even look at a trailer that had a bathroom because she felt it was an extravagance we didn't need. She likes things simple. In fact, she was the one that turned me on to TD's. I thought they were ridiculous the first time I saw them. I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to go camping in a little sardine can like that. It took a few months for me to warm up to the idea.

I'm now most of the way through the planning stages of my first build and saving money to pay for it all. I can't wait to start building and my wife is almost as excited as I am.

The TD adventure was my idea............but the hubby claims all the credit now!

The initial plan was to find a small older camper, fix it up and sell it. This was supposed to be a fun husband wife project. We couldn't find anything to fit the bill. I found the Kufflecreek plans. Showed them to the hubby and asked if we could build it. He said, " yeah, I think so."

When we were all done with the build we loved the little camper so much we couldn't bear to part with it. So we are now a two camper family. The TD gets the most use and the 19ft camper gets used in iffy weather.

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised when my wife said she thought it'd be OK for me to build a TD. I figured this would take a whole lot of convincing so I got on this forum, downloaded the best looking ideas and presented them to her. I think both of us were tired of tent camping and we were talking about maybe buying a pop up trailer to start with and eventually work our way up to a trailer or a fifth wheel

Her only questions were: "Do you think you can really build this?" "Can you get Tom to help you?" and "How much are you going to spend?" The answers were Yup, Yup and about $2500.

I knew from reading this forum that I had the skills to do it and could find answers to almost any issue I would run up against.

I knew Tom would be glad to help. He loves projects (Tom is my neighbor who owns the mecca of all workshops and has built everything from his own house to an art car for Burning Man. This thing runs on a modified Suzuki Samurai engine, burns propane has an articulated art sculpture mounted to itand he built it from the frame up)

And OK, I undershot the price estimate but I think I will be close.

As soon as the rest of the snow melts off around my house so I can pull my frame out from the back yard and I finish the bathroom remodel (2 1/2 weeks) I get to start the build. Can't wait!!

I have a little different situation, I'm not married, but have a girlfriend of 4 years. The only real issue we had (are still butting heads over) is the color. She has been a help from rummaging through junk yards to laminating walls. When I had to make room in the shop it was her idea to let the TD parts live in the house. We have had two glued up walls in the hallway all winter long.

Presentation is everything. People who are opposed to it, typically are comparing it to the wrong thing... a huge RV... So for them it is a downgrade, no bathroom, claustrophobic, the trick is to note that this is an UPGRADE from tent camping! A teardrop is bigger than many tents, has full climate control, video (if desired), zero setup, all those things. If there's still pushback, then you need to respect the little wifey and build a standy! Just keep it small haha

My wife bought me the plans for the teardrop and the welder for the Boxcar frame. I guess she's okay with the trailer building.

Postby Roly Nelson » Mon May 09, 2011 5:16 pm

My story is a bit different. After full-timing in a 28 ft motorhome for almost 8 years, the sweet wife loved it, but could no longer manage the steps to enter our rig due to health issues. When we sold the RV and I tacked up a full-size, cardboard teardrop profile on the garage wall, complete with taped on door and wheel, her first comment was, "you don't expect me to sleep in that thing, do you?"

So, being a bit of a designer and woodworker, I began my 4 x 8 woody project. I could hear her on the phone saying, "You ought to see the dumb trailer he's buillding now!" After a few weeks, and a few coats of varnish, she changed her tune to........"You gotta see the cute little wooden teardfrop he is building!"

Next came the question....."What are those 'trailer people' like anyway?"
"I don't know", says I, "lets walk around at one of their gatherings and see, maybe they are a bunch of drunks". We both attended their next event, and I was admonished by a TD guy, about standing out on the asphalt, hoping to get a glimps of some of their galleys. "Hey, you don't stand out there and sneak a peek, you walk right down through our galley areas and ask questions and take pics" Wow, no motor-homer would ever allow that, but still fearing a confrontation, we began our search for design and cabinet ideas from some of 'those trailer people'.

At the second rig we visited, the wife was invited to streach out inside of a swanky TD and I was offered a cup of coffee. GREAT. After a dozen or more encounters, a young couple invited us to stay for dinner, since they had four steaks cooking and welcomed us to their table..........Again, never in our MH experience, did that ever happen. As we drove back home, I asked what her impression of teardrop folks were, now. Her responce, in so many words or less , is carved on a step stool that I use to this day, land it says: COME TRAVEL WITH ME AND I WILL SHOW YOU THE USA.

She loved our little woody TD and all she had to do was open the door, put her butt on the mattress and swing her legs in and she was in bed! So, dispite a bit of spousal negativity, she changed her mind when she found out that the TD owners were kind of like family. She was always amazed that we could walk away from our rig with both doors and the hatchlid wide open, and not be concerned about being ripped off.

She is no longer with me, since I lost her 2 years ago, and I want to thank my new-found teardrop friends for helping me get my much needed, daily "PEOPLE FIX".

Roly, "going to the nearest campground to visit with some friends that I haven't met yet!"
