Bias tires on a trailer w/Radials on TV? UP DATED PHOTOS

Postby len19070 » Thu May 05, 2011 3:36 pm

Just got a great deal on a set of "Bias" Coker Wide (and I mean very WIDE) white walls for the Scotty.

I know ya can't mix Radials & Bias on the same vehicle....But can I put these on the Trailer with the truck being Radial?

Thanks in advance.

Happy Trails

At first blush, my feeling is that the tires on the trailer do not have to be the same as on the tow vehicle.

Mixing and matching on the TV would change the vehicle dynamics and handling, sometimes unfavorably.

But bias ply tires on the trailer would not change the vehicle dynamics of the tow vehicle, especially the steering.

So I would go for it!

Oh, and lets see a pic of those whitewalls!

i believe that rule only applies if the tires are on the same vehicle. they will heat up at different rates and then cause adverse handling, but from vehicle to trailer, i doubt you would be able to tell the difference.

Len,

There are obviously pluses and minuses to the use of Coker tires.

Plus side: The tires are designed for antique cars and as they are designed for cars they should actually give you a slightly softer ride. A little less jerking on your tow vehicle and as you said a big boost in cool.

Negative side: The tire may have an increase in rolling resistance and you could see a slight loss in mileage.

I currently have low profile agressive tires on my tow and trailer tires on the TD. Tire pressures are 35 lb for tow and 50 for the TD. My point is that we already have very different tires on our tows vs our TDs. I don't see what you are thinking of doing as much different.
