The Doors (not the group!)--some questions...

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Wow Steve C, that is a nice looking door. I am watching this thread because our doors are coming up real soon. I just need to know how to seal them good.
I started out with nothing and I still got plenty left.

I think the doors were my favorite part of the build. Its not very hard to make them and it doesn't take a lot of time. Heck, you'll have most of the material for them left over from building the sides anyways.

The Doors....

Postby kayakrguy » Sun Feb 12, 2006 9:20 am

First, I want to say that Steve's door is impressive--looks great. Gaston's doors look great too. And the 'fat boy' doors look to be about the right size<g>

'Thinkin' on the fly'--I loved that, Dean--my mind works this way: the free association that hit me was: looking in my rear view mirror and seeing the doors flying off the TD...and me thinkin...what the...???

Madjack, about the pictures...well, so far there isn't a lot to show--the garage is a mess so getting it cleaned up will take about 3 months--then we'll take a picture of that and send it along <g>

Besides getting in and out, my main concern with the doors (and the rest of the build)is leaking as in H2O getting into the rig. Mushroom farming is not one of my ambitions...so, my next question about doors is...

What's the best way to weatherproof them? Also, I kinda thought that having the hinge side facing the front and the opening facing the back would make leaks less likely as you drive down the road???? whaddya think?

Thank you guys, for all the advice and pictures....it really does help...
well, most of the time <g> Part of what I have to consider is anything I do needs to be done with a limited cache of tools. My most sophisticated piece of equipment is a mitre saw. The hammer is next.... I made a list of tools it would be neat to have and my list worked out to about 8 grand....

Jim...the easiestsimplistic way to make door seals is probably what is done in the Generic Benroy Plans at the top of this page...using "T" molding and simple weatherstriping. Also popular is for a lip/sealing surface around the inside of the jamb and door closes on the seal around the inner side of the jamb. And yes, the hinge on the forward side(Dean), unless you wanna put suicide doors onit

Doors--surplus/salvage RV sources?

Postby kayakrguy » Sun Feb 12, 2006 10:07 am

Gaston,

What firm did you get your doors from? Do they have a website? Phone number? It occurred to me that people might like haveing that kind of source for parts etc.

Thanks,
JW
