Next project , a drip edge for over the door ... I could just carve one of Foam, and glue it on .... Being non structural , could just paint the foam ... No fabric ... :o

So many cool ways to cut foam for a drip edge! If I hadn't read that cool new foamie site, I wouldn't have known you could just paint over the foam with exterior paint without the cloth.

You could use the dowel method to make sure you keep the drip edge from wanting to peel off during warp speed down the highway, but like many, I have a tendency to want to overbuild!

You know the drill :pictures: !!!

I looked that foam site over. I wonder what their glue is like. Anybody have any experience or thoughts? ( about the foam glue sillies )

Anybody interested , I'll show you how to make your own hot wire bow and cutting devices... Been using that stuff for decades...
Wolf , I'm interested in their glue too... But I don't think it's anything we can't find cheaper ... :o

Rat , you won't have to worry about me blasting down the highway ... I'm always the one in the right lane that everybody's passing .... The wife even makes a big deal when I pass somebody else .... which is usually someone broken down on the roadside... :o   55 is about my "warp" speed ... but that dowel trick is certainly a good idea !!!

You think it is real close to Gorilla glue? that is what I am thinking.

Is there a cheap way to get GG?

Wolf , the GG is cheap enough ... for my Foamie , I only used half a bottle ... and there are always those foam specific Cartridge glues.. for "structural" work ... just thicker and hard to spread , but I'll bet they really stick well to the foam ...

i'd be interested in the coating that would make the surface smooth. wondering about the mesh (in place of the canvas? and the coating that would make the surface smooth? do you think this would be like fiberglass and epoxy?

i guess we will never really know until someone gives it a try.

Gosh Eagle , If it's smooth , it ain't a Foamie ... :o Unless it''s fiberglassed , and sanded for weeks ... but then that defeats the purpose of a Foamie ... Cheap , Rough, Easy ..... Hmmm? Sounds like my first wife ...

If you want it smooth , primer is the secret ... prime and block sand , repeat till it's as smooth as you want ... Lots of work ... There's No Magic finish that you just paint on that will make it smooth without some serious surface prep...

High Gloss paint helps too ...

Just a thought here, but there's a fiberglassing product called 'surface mat' or veil - it's like a really thin mat. It retails here for about $1/sq yd so it qualifies as thrifty. It's meant to dissolve to invisibility with styrene based resins, but I suspect it would work pretty well with paint too. It's normally used to give some backing to the gelcoat on boats and it prevents the fabric texture underneath from showing through the finish.

Just a thought ..... since we cover our Foamies with canvas which has a rougher texture, maybe use a smoother canvas, or cover over the rough canvas with a smooth fabric ... those bedsheets I used on the inside of mine made a pretty smooth surface.. More covering work , but not much weight added... still to get it really smooth you still have to prime and sand ...

Now if you did all this work to get it perfectly smooth , if you ever had to repair a spot , it would show more than a repair on just the canvas texture... which just blends in ...
Just Too much work IMHO... Canvas looks NICE !!!

Glad to see all the progress GPW. Now I see how you textured the surface. Very cool! I figured that, as an artist, you knew what you were doing. LOL

BTW My TD performed very well this weekend and I got a lot of questions about it.
