General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

In my opinion, any well built TD is capable of supporting a canoe even if it was double that weight. The question becomes one of securing it adequately and without causing damage to the TD or the canoe. I cringe when I see a canoe securely strapped to a factory luggage rack on an automobile with no other attachment. The forces aren't just downward, they can be and often are sideways, forward and backward, and even upward. Many (not all) of those factory racks are held on with 4 little sheet metal screws in 18 ga. steel. Traveling at 65 mph or more, the air pressure on the canoe definitely becomes significant. I wouldn't depend upon a couple of screws in good ply or some thin wall tubing to be up to the task. On my Tahoe, I attach to the rack (ratchet straps) AND I tie both the bow and stern to the bumper corners front and back ensuring downward force at all times. I don't go crazy winching it down, but it's definitely secure. The rack holds it up, the bumper ropes hold it down.
As far as motors go ... my paddles and a spare are lashed to either the thwarts or the gunwales when in transit. :R

I had a 6 person inflatable (not a grand though) it was like $150. It would support a trolling motor too. The inflatable part was a benefit and drawback since you could only sit in it and the bottom was soft, I ended up selling mine because of the teardrop theory, I want camping to be easy and inflating the boat was a pain. I just skimmed the post but didn't he say he already had a Jon Boat? A Jon boat would be my choice too.

I think one point that might not have been mentioned is that while the first inclination would be to attach the boat on top of the trailer, but think about the camping experience... you pull in, unhook, set up, and then want to go to the lake. But if you unhook, you are driving to the lake with the boat still on the teardrop, so being able to transport the boat in/on the truck would by my choice.

I had one like this and I wish I had it back. They're light weight and easy to handle plus you can haul it in the back of a pick up or suv.

Well I just bought this:

two weeks ago and haven't had the chance to take out yet. My wife has this one:

We had 2 of the zest, I just out weighed the thing and flipped all the time and it was way to hard to fish off of. I'm will be working on a rack for the truck to haul both so we can take with us to Skidaway Island in April. The Sevylor brand of inflatables are good also, I have a inflatable kayak by them and had a raft for years that I just wore out. You can buy a motor mount for their rafts that will take a trolling motor up to a 2.5 - 4 hp motor.

Here's our canoe mount. It works well. Only takes about 2 minutes to put it up or take it down. The trolling motor is also stored on top along with the life jackets, oars etc.

Yeah they are alot of fun and very stable. I could get 14 MPH on GPS with a 6HP Suzuki 4 stroke.
