Reversable fan blade for ventline fan.

Postby dh » Fri Jun 03, 2011 2:47 am

I want to be able to run my ventline fan in either direction. A lack of funding has had me down, so I resorted to this little project and was testinh my wiring on the switch and realized the fan reverses, but doesn't really move air in the oposite direction. Ventline sells blades for the two fnctions, but not one that does both. McMaster Carr and Grainger both had nothing that would work. Can anybody aid in my search?

The fan motor or any DC motor can be made to run in either direction by switching the wires around.

Normal positive to positive negative to negative reverse the wires positive to negative, negative to positive and the motor runs backwards as does the fan blade

But isn't there always a but as you found out the fan when run in reverse doesn't move as much air as when runing in forward direction due to the pitch of the fan blades.

since most fans have only 3 blades it's hard to bend them to do double duty if fan had 5 blades you could bend 2 and it would help move air in both directions.

I have a window fan that doesn't reverse the direction you just place it in the window so it blows inwards sucking in outside air or turn it around and it blows outward blowing inside air out.

is there a way you could remount the fan motor and blade to swivel so it could blow out or blow in?

I know all that doesn't help finding a multi-purpose blade is hard to do.

DH,

Pete has a good thought - pivoting the fan rather than reversing polarity. Another idea of seen somewhere on here is to use a portable dc fan and make mounts to put it under the hatch.

Take care,

We have only two three speed computer case fans and they only pull air in at the hatch and quite frankly never needed anything else. At something like 100CFM on high they do really well at keeping us cool. Now I realize the the volume set by Antec is a suspect but in a low volume space 400 CF the turn over is impressive even on low.
I am working on the AC unit which will be ducted in through hoses like a large pet cool. The problem has been getting a thermostat to play well so I pulled the one from the AC and will put it in a small plastic box.

The fan in a ventline is on top of the screen, so a swivle really isn't worth the effort for what I'm trying to do. I'll have an AC when on shore power and the fan is really for the night spent without power on our way to our destination, or for chilli night... Maybe I should just leave it in exhaust, I was just hoping a cheap quick blade change would do it.

Fan

You could get a 2nd ventline fan & modify it to install upside down. Use one fan to push air out and to other to bring air in.

Can I ask why you want it to blow in? ..... Is it so it blows on you?.....I found with my Fantastic fan if I open the windows and leave the curtains closed the curtains lift up about 4 inches and the air blowers right on me! Hope this helps!
