Converting a feed door to a Teardrop style trailer door

Postby Deryk the Pirate » Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:10 am

I came across this site http://www.hehrintl.com/0280feederwindow.htm and they show the feeder doors which I think are what alot of people use for the doors on their teardrop trailers.

I think they convert the locking handle mechanism to one on typical trailer doors...

Im sure its been done wondering whats involved in doing it...or is there another easier way to do it?

thanks!

well it looks great but Im dealing with a 50" width of the trailer. Ive liked the look of the "professional door's" but not the price tag. I thought I read somewhere that the doors are really feed doors. and they can be found around a hundred dollars... add 25 for a new lock that can be opened from the inside and the price is much more stomachable lol.

Looks like you may be on to something Derek! That window/door even comes with built in security bars for urban campouts in downtown NYC!

I didnt see a price on the Hehr site though.

Well the bars can be removed... possible modified with a lock and yu can leave your door wide open and get lots of ventilation... that might be a plan!

Hmmm, interesting option if it turns out to be affordable.

Looked online but haven't found them available yet.

...over the years, several of us have contacted Hehr(myself included) and unless you were willing to buy a truckload or two, they weren't interested in dealing with you...maybe you'll have better luck... www.tjtrailers.com is a retail distributor for many of those items...I believe RedNeck Trailer Supply is as well and I'm sure there are others...as you have already surmised, the feed doors, while they look great, are meant to be locked from the outside only and will require modification to work as an entrance door.............

I used the chrome version of that lockset on my teardrop. Below is a view from the inside of the teardrop.

Image

This type of lock is in two halves. It is secured to the door by "clamping" the halves with four screws. The door width has to be between 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" inches thick. The lockset is also fastened on the edge.

They probably can be used with feeder doors, but may take some shimming to work.

Take care,
Tom
