Rest Stop Parking Restrictions

Postby pjsauls » Fri Jun 10, 2011 3:57 pm

I took the following table off the NTSB website; no surprises except for the number of states restricting parking in order to "Prevent Camping".

John

Time Limits In Public Rest Areas 25 Special Investigation Report
Table 7. Public rest area truck parking time limit restrictions.
State Parking Time Limit Reason for Time Limita

Alabama Prohibits overnight parking, unofficially
recommends 4 hours

get some rest.

spaces with no limits
Limited number of spaces available

Florida 3 hours Prevent people from camping

Georgia No limits but discourages overnight parking
and sleeping
Lack of sufficient parking

control activities and remove people from
the public rest area that limit the use of the
facilities by others.

Kentucky 4 hours in regular public rest areas, 24 hours
in two new truck rest havens at inspection
stations (five more havens planned)
Shortage of spaces

Louisiana Discourages overnight parking and
encourages use of private truck areas
Prevent people from camping

Minnesota 6 hours 1) Discourage overnight camping
2) Serve as public safety stop intended to
be short-term
3) Serve fatigued motorists by giving them
adequate time to refresh before continuing
with their trips
4) Allow the department of transportation to
identify abandoned vehicles
5) Control use of park-and-ride facilities

Nebraska 5 hours 1) Encourage turnover because of lack of
parking
2) Discourage camping

Nevada 18 hours Prevent camping

New Jersey 2 hours on New Jersey Turnpike, Garden
State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway
1) Free up spaces
2) Prevent camping

New York 2 hours Idling restrictions to reduce air pollution

Pennsylvania 2 hours Prevent illicit activity

South Carolina 2 hours Not enough spaces

South Dakota 3 hours 1) Lack of parking
2) Keep people from using the public rest
area as a campground

Tennessee 4 hours 1) Free up spaces
2) Prevent problems with campers and
homeless

Virginia 2 hours Provide adequate parking for all drivers

Washington 8 hours 1) Discourage camping
2) Public safety
3) Increase availability of parking spaces

a Safety Board investigators contacted each State, which provided the reasons for the time limits.

WOW! It's a surprise to me... I never thought of that being a problem, but then again I live in Maryland and I guess they didn't see a problem with it either! It's kind of funny to me, some of the reasons. But it is good info though. I probably won't be able to remember the different things for the different states anyway though! I would stay as long as I have to if I am too tired to drive, no matter what state I'm in.

A couple weeks ago, I camped in a rest area in Florida. Looks like I'm a rebel!

Then again, when you pull in late at night and leave early in the morning, I highly doubt many parking spots would really hassle you.

I've camped in quite a few grocery store parking lots, city parking lots, rest areas, etc. and have never even been approached that it wasn't legal. I've even chatted with local police before and they were more interested in why I was parked there than me camping there. When they were told it was for a quick nap, it's always been completely fine.

Florida had a problem back in the 1990's with one or more murders or robberies in highway rest areas (I don't remember which it was). Since their economy depends on tourism, their response was to place armed security guards in every rest area at night, along with signs proclaiming this service on the highway. The need for them to do this makes one think twice about camping out in a rest area...armed guard or not.....

When we had our TT (the big one) we used to stop in any parking lots that the 18 wheelers stopped in. We usually tried to get between 2 trucks (I don't know why I did that, but that was where I wanted to be). We could stay as long as we wanted. We could use our generator, AC, and anything else that made noise because the trucks were making way more noise than we were. With our AC on, the trucks engines sounded only as loud as a fan, and it would lull us to sleep. When we woke up in the AM usually the trucks were gone and we were sitting out in the middle of a parking lot by ourselves. Nobody even looked twice, ever. With a teardrop my only requirement is the place has to be active and well lit. I just feel safer with more people moving around.

I've used hotel parking lots and slept in the back of my SUV. I too would go to a hotel with a tear and sleep in the parking lot.

I slept 4 1/2 consecutive months in a Baltimore hospital parking lot in the back of my SUV. The only problem I ever had was trying to get in the hospitals bathroom when I woke up without peeing in my pants. I am now considering a truck camper for the parking lot at the hospital. I'm there quite a bit for long periods of time. Too bad I can't just put the tear in one parking spot and the SUV in another. I'd be willing to pay for 2 spots if they would let me.

Last year when I treaveled the NY Thurway I emailed them to ask about resting and overnight parking.

The response was very positive.........you can rest and sleep/stay overnight as long as you remain with your unit/trailer. I printed the response and kept it with my camping travel papers.

I have responsibility over a rest area in southern Utah (Hoover's just south of Big Rock Candy Mountain for those who are familiar with it.) Even though it is posted "No Camping", I have never stopped anyone from taking a nap. To me the hazard of driving when drowsy is much more dangerous than having people "hanging around." It is my belief that the signs are actually there to encourage people to take their business to one of the several wonderful RV/trailer campgrounds within just a few miles.

As far as crime is concerned, fortunately, I live in a very safe part of the country. The majority of the crime here is either by people traveling through or by those unfortunate souls who have drug and/or alcohol problems. I wouldn't have any issues sleeping with the family overnight almost anywhere around here. Be discrete, keep valuables out of sight, and don't give anyone the appearance that you are an easy target. If it doesn't "feel" right move along to another spot. Go about your business with confidence and authority and most low-lifes will leave you alone.

"Pennsylvania 2 hours Prevent illicit activity " I dont know about you but 2 hours is more then enough tine lol

Its a joke, if your driveing down the road at night with your trailer and your tired its better to pull off for a few hours then have an accident. I guess the owners of campgrounds get on the sttethat they are the "equivalent" of a hotel for campers/trailers. Well how many are open at 3am?

Is there a site that shows which Walmarts you can overnite at?
