I wrapped 2 layers of Reflectix around my ice chest using double sided carpet tape. And covered it with Gorilla tape.

The tried and true of course is the cooler with lots of ice. I bought a Waeco refrigerator and have installed a 12V power point in the back of the Subaru (the one there [factory] was not sufficient). When we reach the camp site it comes out of the car and gets plugged in to 120 AC or 12VDC. One thing to remember is that at least in my set up when the trailer is connected to the TV and plugged in, the battery in the TV is also being charged by the PD converter. I was trying to figure out how to keep the refrigerator from walking off when we for instance visit Washington DC and use public transport. It will be left in the car plugged in and the car left plugged into the trailer. I plan on making an astrofoil cover for the refer to cut down on solar gain.

I have a 3 way fridge now which makes life camping very easy. But before we had the fridge I used a cooler here in aussie we call them an ESKY however I still call mine a chilly bin which is the name for them in New Zealand. I freeze everything a week before we leave. MIlk, Juice, precooked meals. Freeze ham. bacon etc in the correct portions if the cooler is full ie not much air and you only open it once a day to get out what you need for that day every thing will stay frozen for up to 3 days- I live in tropical Queensland so could be longer in a cooler climate. Once ice melts and creates water everything thaws so I don't add ice. For longer trips you can buy dry ice. Keep the food in a seperate chilly bin from the drinks as this is opened constantly. I still use the cooler/ chilly bin for the frozens and just transfer what I need into the gas fridge. LOve the gas fridge for my cheeses and nibbles. I bake bread fresh each day. FRuit and veges can be a bit of a problem but I generally pre cook a lot of one pot meals so we don't have to carry alot of veges which don't travel well.

Postby ssrjim » Sat Jun 11, 2011 5:23 pm

I have a five day cooler that we keep in the truck. They are worth the money and do keep things cool much longer. 5 days...

I have taken a small dorm fridge and set it under my side table, I only did this once. Usually I use a cooler with ice and put it under the TD on the shady side, and I also buy the things that are very temperture sensitive (the things that spoil easily or grow bacteria easily)for one days meals.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Keep things cool just like people did (and do) when camping in a tent. A cooler with ice.

Dorm fridge here. I don't like messing with coolers, except for drinks. I'm still looking for a better way though. Picking the dorm fridge up and loading and unloading it isn't the best plan, but I can't give up the fridge.

I worried about the cooling food issue when I was building and bought a cooler to put in it. Then I got to thinking about when I was younger and the motorcycle trips I would take. Some of them up to 3 weeks long. Never had a cooler ( I was not riding a Honda Goldwing pulling a trailer with chandelier)

So I did not build it in. Usually the only reason I take the cooler in the TV is for the refreshments I take for fellow campers.

I just do without.

Here's my Waeco:

Hold on to your hat, they're not cheap. I added an electric lock to the tailgate so its locked up when I lock the doors. The tonneau cover locks too.

I have three small coolers that I use. One has my food in it, and is seldom open. Another has beverages, and get's opened a lot, so I have to add ice to it. And the third us for ice.

I also move my coolers around during the day, to keep them in the shade. At night, they are locked in the car to keep the coons away from them.

I also start the trip with towels taking up any empty space in my food cooler. A full cooler stays colder longer.

Two coolers when I'm on the road (camping or at a dog show):
- 28 qt Coleman marine cooler, with block ice or 40 qt Igloo cooler with block ice to store food, usually only opened 3-4x/day
- 28 qt Coleman "picnic basket" vintage cooler with cube ice and beverages, that gets opened more frequently.

Both coolers get locked in the Jeep at night, and are more accessible during the day. When it's just me, I've gone with the 28 qt marine cooler and block ice.
