Awning for TTT. Maybe not so T...

Postby emtlibby » Tue Jun 07, 2011 2:04 pm

So I've sold our beloved Wazat teardrop.

We just bought a Heartland MPG 183. What can I say, 3 kids, we need more room, for now.

The camper only has this huge side tent available, and the dealer says a regular awning wont work because of the radius roof....

Is he right. Any ideas.

Awning rail is all that you need, then have a awning made. Marti out of Chico Ca. does a very good job with her awnings

I know some T@DA owners have awnings form her, too, and possibly some T@B owners. A couple of T@B owners with a rail made their own out of rope and a tarp.

Oh, and one T@B owner has the regular canister-type RV awning. It's fastened onto the front and one end extends, I think, a little past the trailer. If you're interested in a pic I can probably locate one.

A "regular" awning to most dealers is a copletely self contained, self roll up affair.

A "rope and pole" awning, or a bag awning will work very well on your trailer.

If you must have a self contained awning, it will simply have to be only as long as the flat area of the roof.

A rope and pole awning, along with some clips, snaps, or other fasteners, can be attached and formed around the curves of your trailer all the way to the ground on both ends.

The images I have seen of your unit shows an awning rail. They may be an option but there are clearly on the ones in the pictures of the units I have seen.

Here is a couple pictures of my campin' buddy scuba's awning rail on his cargo.

That is nothing more than an inexpensive tarp available everywhere. He folds one time over 3 - 4 pieces of 1/4 fiberglass survey stakes
( available at any farm store) and slides in into the rail a length at a time. A couple support poles out board staked off keeps it tight. It would be easy to form a length of emt electrical conduit to the same radius as the roof and drill and slide it onto pins off of the outer support rods Giving you a natural rain shedding form.

I have spent a few rainy evenings under his "side porch" and it is a great addition.

Here is a picture of the RV awning on a T@B. This is not the bag-type that uses the awning channel.

We now have awning rail on three sides of the Compass Rose. It is UV stabilized PVC plastic mounted to the top with 3M HSB tape (no screw holes) with the edges sealed with silicone calking. The roof is not not entirely flat and the rail is mounted on top to give more clearance and to provide a drip edge.
There is no reason you can not have a tarp we have a a Paha Que 14'X14', narrowing down to 6' at the tear. and we have two Kelty car tarps for the sides. Paha Que can make what ever you can think of out of quality material. Nancy just got through sewing the rope into the three tarps for the Kedar rail and the Paha Que materiel is better than twice the weight of the Kelty.

Awning

Postby cool » Tue Jun 14, 2011 5:10 am

Hello from the Irish Teardrop Club. Just looking at the rig you have ,I would say you could fit a regular awning made for a caravan to yours. The caravans here are made different to the States and the awnings fit these vans perfect. But with a nice awning rail fitted to suit whatever awning you buy ,this would look fab.Check out The irish Camping and Caravan club web site and we have links to awning sellers and see what you think.Good Luck and if you need any more info ,make contact anytime . :)
