Formaldehyde ... Cancerous...

Postby GPW » Sat Jun 11, 2011 11:30 am

Saw this in the news this morning ... Looks like the RV industry is going to take yet another Big hit ... " That "new trailer smell" which seems to last and last .. can be Very BAD for your health ... Many people here still in litigation of health problems from FEMA trailers ... Something to be aware of even using our little amounts of plywood ... :o

The subject of formaldehyde as it pertains to the RV industry is old news, sir; regardless of when any recent story may have broken.

...and the best plywood to use for a teardrop trailer project would be a product that uses an exterior-grade glue as it is claimed to be not nearly as toxic as an interior-glue wood product might be. Why, I do not know... but one solution to the problem topic of your post is, VENTILATION and plenty of it.

We always suspected as much ... now it's Official ... for what that's worth ...

Focus , with the Intense heat of this area ... One usually stays in an enclosed Air conditioned trailer as much as possible ... Ventilation is Great in the milder months , but summers here are BRUTAL .... Mad Jack and I can agree on this ...
Right now it's 92F Inside my Studio , with 85% Humidity ... Crank up the AC ... No time to be outside ...

GP,

As one who has always been concerned that things that smell bad may be harmful to me...I simply leave a window or two cracked open when the A/C is running, at home and camping.
My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I prefer fresh air and staying cooled off.

RE: Formaldehyde

Postby mezmo » Sat Jun 11, 2011 11:06 pm

I'm very allergic to formaldehyde. It does a job on me!

I can't be inside any new RV or even Manufactured Home - can't stand
the smell and it's effects on me.

Hence my need to build my own TTT someday, or find a used one that
has offgassed enough for formaldehyde to be gone [if it ever is].

The problem is all the modern building materials for anything contain
formaldehyde it seems. I went to a 'Tour of Homes' a couple years
ago and had the same problem with the new expensive homes we looked
at! I even got a spontaneous nosebleed when I walked into one of them!

So I have to be 'green' whether I want to or not.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Even some shampoos have formaldehyde! Or atleast they used to. I haven't checked lately.

Same here. I hate AC and like open windows. Fortunately here in Idaho it is not needed that much. I do not have AC in my house and only one vehicle with AC which I seldom turn on more than about 2 weeks of the year.

I have been spotted driving around town with the window done in -25 F weather. Did have the heater going full blast and a good coat on.

I have had some of the plywood for my build sitting in my shed for almost a year. I hope most of the smell is gone before I sure it.

Formaldehyde cancerous?

I grew up in a funeral home, it never effected anyone we used in on in that way.?.
