"Did your screws go through the trim ring and into the frame of the window and simply squeeze the to together to sandwich the fiberglass shell?"

Yes. The screws are very short though.

My trim ring can be flipped over shuch that it allows for a greater thickness to be sandwiched, however the holes for the rivets do not line up. I probably will try to do this and see how it goes.

I used to have a 27 ft Cornado sloop on Lake Michigan. http://sailboatdata.com/VIEWRECORD.ASP?CLASS_ID=607 Man I miss that boat. You have a boat right? What do you have?

I have a Watkins 27 Pilothouse motorsailer...I want to turn it into a trawler. 2 weeks after I bought it as a big project I got laid off for 14.5 months...it really put a damper on the restoration. Now building lil vardo 2 is takin time away from it... but selling the first on funded build 2 and alot of work on my car (timeing belt amongst other things is being done today) And bein the american way Im working but for about 25% less then I used to earn.... 1 day it will be done lol.

Guess I was lucky with my rings....they had tiny sheet metal screws holding the rings. Bet the pop rivets were a pain.

Here is a very bad photo of my window trim. It is split on the bottom so you can see the profile of it.

Same size as my sloop. Nice. I moved out of state and sold my boat. I regret it.

I too lost my job a few years back. I had to accept a job at a lower pay scale. After I took a second job after that (also at a lower pay) I bought a house. 4 months later the company reduced my salary by 10%. my house went into pre forclosure. Anybody who says we are in some kind of economic recovery is crazy.

Water holding tanks

Postby VaLEWF » Mon Jun 27, 2011 3:22 pm

Nice build!! Do you plan to have black water/gray water holding tanks? How much do you think your camper will weigh upon completion? Very impressive!

BTW-First post.

Thank you very much! I am honored that you chose my build thread for your first post. Man I sure hope your are talking about my trailer and not one of the other photos of someone elses trailer that are in my build thread.

As far as the weight goes, I truly have no real idea of where it is going to end up. I have not done this before. Guessing based on how I am building it compared to what else I have seen here I am going to go out on a limb and say 950 lbs.. I will have no battery and no propane tank and stove, nor will it have a fresh water holding tank or a water pump, so I am hoping that that will go a long way to keeping it light. To answer your other question; yes I am going to have grey and black water holding tanks. They will be the kind you move on wheels under the trailer.

I just took a week vacation and so have not worked on the trailer for a while. Started back up yesterday and began working on the dinette seating frame work.

I am most certainly talking about your build. I am probably going to model my build after yours. Not exactly like it but very similar. I already have a 4x8 HF trailer and aluminum sheets to skin the camper with. I am slowly formulating my plan and gathering materials. If I am going to get my bride to camp with me there will have to be a potty and your design is the best that I have seen so far for such a small space.
Will there be a roof independent of the pop top for the bathroom?

Again I am flattered.

Though my bathroom could have had the ceiling extend upward when the pop top went up, or it could have remained simply open, instead I have elected to have a perminent ceiling over the bathroom. It remains at a level just under the poptop when it is in the down position. I have a drop down for the shower pan, so from the bottom of the shower pan to the bathroom ceiling is 5'-5". My Wife is 5'-2" so she can stand up in it with some room to spare. I at 6'-1" will be crouching to shower. I did this for complete privacy and I have a use for the space when the top is in the up postion. The AC unit will be placed attop the bathroom ceiling.

The permanent top over the bathroom is what I would do also.
I will be watching your build for more ideas. Looks good.

water tank and pump

Postby sheltie » Mon Jul 04, 2011 7:27 am

We have just started our own standie with a shower and a cassette toilet. If you are not using a battery or a water tank and pump then how are you setting up the shower and toilet? Because if I can eliminate the battery, water tank and pump it will save me in weight! We will be towing with a corolla so the lighter the better!

I am building my trailer only to be used with AC electrical hook up and city water hookup. Therefore I do not need a DC system at all. No pump needed for the fresh water either as the city hook up is pressurized. No battery no inverter no charging system. No propane tank either. All of that is a lot of weight. It does not mean I could not use the trailer at a more primative site. I could simply bring along what I would if I was tent camping. Battery powered stand alone lights and flashlights and a coleman lantern outside. This is my plan. Keep it simple in a way.

Here is my latest Craigslist score. 25 bucks for the microwave and the mini fridge. The fridge is very old school but is cold and has a tiny freezer.
