Was this article posted to eHow or eNotHow? I think the author posted to the wrong web site. At a minimum, he misjudged his audience.
There are a lot of reasons for camping in a TD. Economy might be a factor, but, as many have pointed out, you can do things with a TD that simply are not practical with a 30-foot fifth wheel with slide outs. What you camp in is purely a personal decision. When I buy/build something, I don't compare it to something else that is very different, I compare it to my personal needs/wants.
What it boils down to is using the right tool for the right job. The hammer might feel very comfortable in my hand, may have good balance and swing nicely, and it will probably get the job done. But if I am trying to flush my radiator, I may find a small wrench much more to my liking. (My inner tree hugger also acknowledges that I won't be filling the landfill with broken radiators.)
