If you were to build the tear to a standard mattress size, like a double, or queen, the you could use one of your old mattresses when you upgraded, or even get a used one. Used ones are SUPER cheap -- just check for the wet spot

I don't think you could do it any cheaper than that.

I thought my 4" of Wally memory foam was pretty good but ya'll are making me wonder if I should add some more. Maybe the 4" is why that lady that looks back at me on Sun morning looks so tired.

Re: The cheaper alternative(?)

I'm not cheap, just raising a family of 5 in today's economy, trying to build a Michelob product on a Pabst Blue Ribbon budget.

With the caveat that I do not want to use an air mattress, what is the cheap alternative for some sort of padding/mattress for the TD?

I cannot spend $300 on something we're probably only going to sleep in for 2-3 nights, 2-3 times a year.

Going Green to save green. I was cruisin thru the ritz side of town and there it was at the curb a beautiful queen mattress set. Being sensitive to the ecology I felt recycling should be in order so I tossed the pillow top queen mattress in the truck. I shoved it into the tear just before I closed the nose up. If it ever comes out it will have to come out in pieces. Total cost zero. :D

As it is just me alone when I camp I saw no need to have the bed take up my whole interior. So, I removed the 2 24" wide mattresses and replaced them with a 31" rollaway bed mattress topped with a 2" piece of foam. As a result, now I have space inside for storage cabinets. After all, how much room does 1 person need when he camps alone, lonely, cold, ........

FreeCycling

Postby Alfred » Sat Apr 18, 2009 11:27 am

Regarding picking up someone's discarded queen mattress, I was thinking about doing the same thing. I am on the local FreeCycling email list, also sometimes peruse the CraigsList free items, and very often someone is giving away a queen mattress. I did not know if it would fit exactly the measurements of my tear.

I had a 3" memory foam topper laying around the house, so I took it down to a foam place in town, and he glued it to another 3" regular foam. Then he cut it into 3 sections in the size I wanted. Forced the wife to sew the covers and slid them in the tear. I can stack them when travelling and place bigger(dirty, wet) items on the floor. Cost? About $170.00....

You can fold a true Temperpedic and stuff it in the door. They are only about $2000.

Im using some caravan cussions scrounged from a damaged caravan in a local wreckers yard. Not an ideal colour, but comfy and wont be seen when covered by a quilt

Mattress options...

Postby Alfred » Thu Jun 23, 2011 5:25 pm

Hey Gang,

Getting ready to buy the mattress soon - Finally at that point in the build. Anyone know of any deals out there on foam or mattress or is the Walmart 4" topper still the best deal for something new?

Thanks!

5" thick medium density open cell foam custom-cut to size at the local foam shop.

Had an air bed but the interior of my all-metal trailer has too many sharp corners

The foam shop sells several densities of foam as mattresses and allows you to lay down on them to test density and thickness.
