Right rear rot begone!

Postby frank_a » Sat Jun 25, 2011 5:20 pm

I'm not sure how good a job I did, but all the rotted wood that fell out of the right rear got replaced today.

Image

Everything inside from the top of the corner seam all the way down, and then back across to the wheel well opening, the entire top frame for the door, other pieces here and there.

I didn't have much to go by, so maybe my door frame will be a bit tight, but I don't think so. I should know tomorrow. Air stapler gun was a major asset. I should have had one of those a long time ago! A buddy lent me a table top power plane, and I wouldn't mind one of those either.

This all started when we got back from our first Sunspot camping trip the 13th of the month. Soon as I had time a few days later I went down to re-do some of the wiring...

Good this is done. I need to drill new holes in all the new wood, but my right shoulder told me to quit for the day. Shop is clean (me too), tools all put away, and we're going out dinner. More tomorrow.

Success!

The doors shut and open just fine. Frame literally snaps into place. We'll see how it goes.

Image

You can see in the pic the nice bright aluminum above the door frame. That's a result of the weathered paint disappearing when hit with acetone, which I used for removing traces of butyl tape. I'm going to try and find some paint for it I guess.

Off to the next project.

Wiring done! (For now...)

Postby frank_a » Sat Jul 02, 2011 4:07 pm

Too many interruptions today, but did get my wiring done and cleaned up. No good position to do this in, and me with my bad back! My sciatic nerve is speaking to me...

Image

If you look back at any of my previous post pics, you could see what I started out with. I ripped everything out, then quickly wired it for Tear Up the Adirondacks 1st weekend of June. Needed to re-do it to free up space in this lower rear hatch. You can see in the right side pic wires for both the tail light, and marker lights as well.

Image

I believe I will cover a good portion of the back of the hatch where all the wires run with a piece of luan fastened so it comes off easy. That will protect most everything, and allow free use of the space for other stuff.

Been one thing after another! Next is scissor jacks. Well, no, next is cleaning up the mess I left from wiring!

Pretty nice.

You should put this in the build journal.

Thanks guys. What build journal? My album?

Don't know how much more there will be the next few days. Something has come up.

Scissor jacks mounted

Postby frank_a » Sun Jul 03, 2011 4:43 pm

Well folks, as of 6:30 this morning, Gail and I became grandparents. I figured I was going to Buffalo to see my first grandchild, but woke up sick and couldn't go. Gail did, so in-between resting and trying to take it easy today, I mounted 4 scissor jacks.

Image

I did it as close to each corner as possible, while keeping the jack ends away from people's shins. I added a new angle iron crossmember in the back, and used scrap pieces (a bit over 10" each) from cutting the rear piece to size to mount the front ones. Old steel looks crummy, but it's still good and strong. Each jack will be mounted with two 3/8 and two 5/16 bolts. I need new hardware (everything is just finger tight), then will wrap it up. Basically, all the hard work is done!

Image

Next is putting the inside back together again. I have new 1/4" birch plywood to cover the walls where the carpet was, and 2 sheets of 3/4" oak AB grade for our bed and future seats. If I feel decent tomorrow I'll start on that. I'm done for the night!

I hope you all have a great 4th! Next year we'll be camping!

With my new jacks on I can work on the interior remodel.

Image

I tore the interior covers off the wheel wells because they were elevated such that a small open storage place was on the top of both of them.

Image

Handy, but had to go away as these will be part of the bed base soon. I think I need more 3/4" plywood. These need to get faced with something more substantial than 1/4" stuff.

Done for the night!

Gee, ya might know, I found a better piece of metal for mounting the jacks in my shop last night. May have to give that another go. I could use all the ones I made from that crummy piece of metal and templates for all the holes.

Set up my poor man's panel saw last night and made the first few cuts on my 3/4" AB grade oak plywood for the bed platform. Each piece will be 54" X 38" so that combined they will be 54" X 76" or full bed size. I need to make some supports for it maybe later today.

Coming along pretty well.

Temporary bed is done!

Postby frank_a » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:41 am

Just finished, all done in 3/4" AB grade oak plywood. Part of the support is a reconstruction of the wheel well covers with pieces of 3/4 plywood. Gail got the cushions done last night. You can see there are narrow and wider ones. The narrow ones will be seat bases, the wider ones seat backs (some day). Still need to get a couple coats of Minwax on the oak.

Now it's one to rebuilding the walls back where I tore carpet off. I have 1/4" good birch plywood for that, then it's a couple shelves from 1/2" good birch plywood. Hope to be done by tomorrow so I can play with metal and get my propane tank strapped on.

Hope you're all doing well!

New toy

Postby frank_a » Sat Jul 09, 2011 10:48 am

Got it off craigslist Wednesday. Got it registered yesterday. Will soon be traveling with our tiny travel trailer! It's a '83 Coleman 15' canoe with a stern for a small motor. We have an electric trolling motor we'll use on it, or just paddle it.

Very nice rebuild Frank. I have enjoyed watching it progress. Nice canoe also. Would you be kind enough to post pics of your Power Cat? I'm a classic boat owner as well and would love to see it. Martin H.
