An old train car...

Hi Gang,

I don't know the story on the old train car, parked in a siding along near a river in Asheville. I thought it was interesting, with the trolley top.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

I thought about it, but better judgement prevailed!

Wondering about how old it is?

Postby Alfred » Wed Jun 29, 2011 7:43 am

I'm wondering how old it is? Reminds me of the old Pullman Cars except it is obviously a baggage or mail car...

I was sorta thinking the same about it being a baggage car (mail hadden't crossed my mind) with the lack of windows.

I worked with a young woman who remembered her grandfather working on a mailcar. She rode with him once and had a vague memory of him bracing himself against the car's sway as he sorted mail.

Any of you going to DC. The Postal Museum is excellant. As is the Spy Museum.

Hey RP,

I had a relative a few generations back, my Great-Grandfather I think it was, or maybe it was the great-great-grandfather, who lost a finger in the old train car couplers working in the railroad yard, during the great depression I believe. I heard the stories as a kid.

My Dad was a career postman/letter carrier, but he never worked on the railroad. He did have a bicycle route, at one time.

Sorting mail on a swaying train car, I would think one would have to have good timing, good aim.
