O.K. I have been lurking for a few months and have made the plunge on starting construction. I have the Kuffle Creek plans for the Cubby and Comet and I will be building on a 5x8 frame extending it to 5x 9.5 with a hybrid Benroy (back) and Cubby (front), I hope I am not violating any unwritten design standards by creating such a Frankenstein design. I am looking to maximize space and like the kitchen to the full end of the trailer on the Benroy and the extra 6" I will be putting on the front with the classic front end design. I will be trying to make the roof as flat as possible for loading up a gear basket on some roof rails to be mounted later. Rough profile here



A Northern Tool D.I.Y 5x8 trailer arrived yester day.



Box was a little beat up and one of the fenders was bent out of shape by about 2", but otherwise everything was good to go.

Quick assembly and it started to take shape.



Axle is underslung as this will see mild off road use, I am attempting to build similar to http://www.adventuretrailers.com/teardrop.html I am also getting many suggestions and ideas from the Off Road section on the forum. Great stuff here, and some fantastic builds some have done.

Nearly complete for the day and showing one of the rims that will get mounted. I need to get some final measurements for the wheel adapters going from the 5 x 5 on the trailer to 6 x 4.5 on the Nissan rim. Once adapters come in I will check wheel spacing with the trailer and determine if I am going with a 2x4 spacing on the outside of the trailer to extend the with by ~3". Extension of 18" on the back end of the trailer is still up in the air as to if it will be wood or metal.



My daughter is ready for the finished TD. We went to Moab over Memorial day week this year and tent camping was a little chilly on a few nights but well worth it for the trip out there. Mom has stated that she will not go in a tent, so that is how I got to this point and my adventure with this process. Final deadline: TD will be operational and on a trip to Moab Memorial day week 2012, local shakedown weekend to resolve any issues to be completed prior to departure.

This is the end of day 1, just over 3.5 hrs to get here with some help from a neighbor (great for flipping trailer). Lights and fenders are not on at this point. Fenders and stock rims and tire will be available if anyone would be interested at a later date.



I have some travels coming up so don't expect much to happen here till the end of August. Planning as I go and checking dimension as parts arrive and I check fit before the next step.

The more I looked at the planned profile the more I didn't like it. I took some of the profiles that I was looking at and overlaid them to get something like this.



I am finalizing my design to use the front of the Comet 10' Kuffel Creek plans, and the rear of the Gruman/Sportsman. I have some plywood on order from Lowes 4x10 ACX 3/4 for the walls and a 5x9 AC 3/4 for the floor, AKA ping pong plywood. The limit on 9' on the floor also steered me away from using the Benroy for the rear, using the Gruman style for the rear will allow 6' overhang with 6' on the front using the full 10' for the side walls.

A quick cut out using the cardboard from the trailer and a few other boxes put together gave me a quick mock-up of the profile.



Door style is from the Cubby plans I have. I think this will finalize my profile to be something along this style. I still want to draw in the cabinets and other items on my mock-up before the plywood arrives next Wednesday. Still need to figure out my now 1' extension to the rear and upgrade the tounge. Unfortunately my weekend is shot and no work on the TD.

I agree with Woodbutcher. Your second profile is really nice - much better than the first.

I too overlaid different profiles and used the "front half of one" with the "back half of another" for my final design.

I was out of town for a 3 day weekend, so not much has happened. I borrowed a Lincoln weld pac 100 from a buddy. So now I am learning a few things; not sure I like MIG welding, I don't think this is a big enough welder, I think I will reset this welder to flux core. I did manage to do enough practice welds to feel confident enough to put the hitch jack on, cleaned it up and put some primer back on what paint I cleaned off.

I got a few 2x4 and ripped them down, I am thinking I should have waited till I had the trailer all ready to put them together before ripping them down. I still need to get my 1ft extension figured out. Looking for some steel tomorrow.
