Don't try this at home 6" pipe

Postby Shadow Catcher » Fri Jul 08, 2011 4:20 pm

OK I screwed up :x There was space between the tongue box and the trailer that I felt would hold a 6" pipe to hold that would hold tent poles and sewer hose. I measure twice and went looking for 6" pipe and end plugs. There is HUGE difference in price between 4" and 6" pipe $> but I ordered the pipe and fittings and when they came in the price was $150 and I got it home, and It DID NOT FIT, that ID vs OD thing. I special ordered it and could have returned the fittings but the pipe had been cut.
This morning I decided to see if I could move the tongue box just enough forward to shoe horn it in. I could and it did and it is such a tight fit I don't even have to fasten it in.

Shadow Catcher even if it is lodged in tight just think what damage it could do if you were to hit a bump and it flew off striking something or someone.
I have a cousin who had a 2X4 fly off his work truck it went through the windshield of an on coming car.
no one was hurt but he was sued and it cost him a lot.
so please fasten it down someway better safe than sorry.

It is in sideways and I would see it creeping out. Let me put it this way I had to use a sledge hammer to get it in and it is locked in by the side seam.

Howdy,

Please do a favor for me and that is send a PM to me of your planned route information while towing your teardrop so I am not on the same road with you and your pipe.

Thanks,
Maury

I'm not going to say a thing. It would only be deleted by a new admin any ways.

We just had the frame reinforced and if anything as things sag a bit it will get tighter. BUT if it will make folk more comfortable I will throw a couple of heavy wire ties around it.

I agree with Mike on this one. Tie it down. I have towed for many many years and seen a lot of things on the road that should never have happened. And they did.

Never say never.. ;)

I KNOW it is secured and can't be moved without tools...so, I am not goin' to tell ya to DO anything...BUT as another 2million+ mile trucker, I will say, it is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING what wind and vibration will and can do...and that is before Murphy raises his ugly head...imjusayin.....................

This is comical in a sense, all of us are trying to convince a fellow forum member to do the right thing and properly secure the pipe (that's a good thing), but somethig that scares me a whole lot more is how car and truck manufacturers are allowed to attach spare tires!! Nobody seems to say anything about the millions of potential
disasters waiting all of us every day.

How many compact (or full size) spares have you seen in or on the side of the roadway? Here in the rust belt, I see them regularly. The spare on many pick-up trucks, most vans, and SUV's are held under the vehicle with an 1/8" cable, the size that is used on your garage door!! The cable is strong enough for this duty, however, the cable rusts right at the attachment point of the steel cross bracket that holds the spare.

The tiny cables construction is probably 7X7 galvanized AC cable. Meaning there are 7 main strands consisting of 7 smaller strands twisted together. These 49 tiny little wires that make up the cable can rot through quickly allowing the attachment to fail.

I witnessed a mini van that lost its compact spare 2 cars in front of me a couple of winters ago. The spare dropped on the road (city street) and the car behind it hit it with it's right front wheel. Luckily the road surface was snow/ice covered which allowed the spare to slide on the road when hit by the slow moving vehicle instead of climbing over it as it would at high speed on dry pavement.
This incident ended well, but think about hitting a spare in the road at 75 mph, I see roll over!! it's something we should all be aware of.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.....No! it's just another spare tire!!
