starting a new trailer in northern california....

Hi all--

I'm mike_c and my partner and I are starting a teardrop trailer in Blue Lake, CA. We're using Kevin Hauser's 10 ft. Comet plans as a starting point, although we've already made the decision to widen the frame to 56 inches rather than the 47 inches Hauser specifies. Right now I have a pile of cut steel in the backyard. Hopefully in a day or two that will weld itself into something resembling a trailer, LOL.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions to ask here. We'll be posting pics of the build as it progresses, too. So howdy T&TTT from the North Coast!

where reality runs a razor thin seam between fact and possibility;

Anywhere I roam where I lay my head is home....

Welcome from just around the corner in Eureka. There are several teardroppers from the Humboldt County area. If I can be of any help just let me know. Good luck with your build. :thumbsup:

Wow, thanks much, Jerome! I have seen bunches of teardrops heading up and down the 101 in recent years, and seen a couple for sale locally on craigslist. Kathy and I have been wanting to build and customize one of our own for a couple of years now-- this summer just seemed like the best time to get started. First thing I've learned: EVERYTHING takes longer than you expected it to take. Everything!

Nonetheless, I tack welded the main frame members this evening when the breeze died down a bit, and I'll be out back welding them up in the morning while it's relatively still. We're building in the backyard, under a Costco 10 x 20 carport.

I think the final decision for us came in early June, while we were camping in the Owens Valley. A week plus sleeping on the ground-- we're in our mid-50s and we've observed that the ground gets harder every year. It's true. These days, it's damned hard, especially after a week or so. On the way out, we passed a couple pulling a rather obviously home built teardrop, looked at one another and said "next time we need one of those." Dragging a mattress around behind us didn't seem so appealing twenty years ago-- now, it sounds like just the thing.

Best--
