I do like that one, but I definately need something bigger. I was at the reuse yard at the dump the other day and saw a ladder rack for a short bed crew cab pickup. I didn't ask how much but I did take a very good look at it and think it would make a good base for a slide in camper.

It was made with round tube steel that seemed pretty thick judging from the ring I got out of it when I gave it the old knock test. It would little modification and is extremely rigid.

So when I get my office finished, I will be doing some drawings based on the use of an old ladder rack.

They also happened to have an old set of bed camper jacks. Looked like someone had bought a set of four, and never used them. I should have bought them at least, but since I am still in the very early planning stages, and I still have a couple of things to finish up on the teardrop, I decided to hold off. Of course they probably would have told me $5, maybe I should go back and see if they are still there.

When I was a small child, my father made a camper shell out of 1/2" conduit and siding. We were in Central California, near Lee Vining, and were in pretty bad storm. Mom made us all get into the cramped cab of the truck (my older brother and sister, along with my Mom and Dad) . Within minutes of abandoning the camper, the wind ripped it off the back of the truck and shredded it.


This has nothing to do with anything, but the discussion of building a slide in camper brought it to mind.

With the economy and the cost of materals, I would look for an older unit already built, Depends on how much time and space you have to build. I contemplated a truck camper and had a chance to buy a nice older unit, but you lose all the space in the bed of your truck. Only advantage is if you fish and tow a boat, still you lose tons of space for storage. Or look for a larger stand up trailer for when all of you go. Easier to get ready to go than loading a truck camper. Large pop ups also sleep 6 and are easy to tow. I know all not tear drops but when you have to accomidate 6 people on a trip, needs change. Or build a strech teardrop on a tandem axle with 6 side doors and seperate pigeon holes to sleep in. Ok then 5. With rear galley of course! Bill

But you would need a ladder to get in the door (Well some of us would.) and of course it is not a cab over.

actually i have built two. the first was just a nice little cap for my ranger.

then i decided i needed more room, but didn't want the air resistance.
i built what was basicly a topless cap with a platform over the cab. it had sockets for fiber glass flexi poles. sewed up a top out of canvase that looked just like a covered wagon top. wheni parked i popped up the canvase and had a dandy little sleeping area. and room to cook.

wish i had pictures,,,,but that was before the digital era.
