Quick question about sleeping in tear

Postby UK-Brian » Sun Jul 24, 2011 9:30 pm

This is our first night in the tear. It is four of us: wife, 2 daughters and myself. I was wondering if I should be concerned about our air. I've read the sticky on airtight tears and it got me to thinking. We are using a small window unit air conditioner but my tear does not have windows to crack. Its sealed up pretty tight except the back galley wall (have not finished the galley). I can open the roof vent but loose the cool air. So what does everyone think?

Thanks Brian

I'd say crack the vent just a half inch or so. Just enough to let a bit of fresh air in.

If you crack the vent the hot air you make will go up. The air conditioner will work better if you have some incoming anyway!

Might want to install some discrete vents.... Something that can NEVER be sealed closed..... The loss of a little cool air is really negligible compared to loss of four lives.....

Open the vent a tad, four people found in a TD is not the sort of advertising we want or need.

Ok now I'm a litte more than concerned. Worried for my girls safety, I opened the vent around 2-3 inches but is this enough? I really have no way of opening the doors and no windows what can I do?

Brian you will be fine and so will they! Remember the a/c pumps what in?? Cold AIR!! You want to crack the vent to let heat and any excess CO2 out (4 people in a tear) and help keep the condensation down. I have a real small tear and no vent but have windows in my doors and I use one for the a/c to come in and other cracked and never had a problem. I do leave the doors open the next day so the tear dries out. COndensation is a pain but I like my a/c!

Hey Brian

Maybe you should go ahead and crank that vent open alot more. Later on you can do something else about ventilation for your camper. Just be safe and have fun.

Cliff is right. You would probably be OK. But if your still worried, leave the vent open too.

Cool air is heavier than warm air. Ever notice the meat cases at the market are open, yet the meat remains cold? Open the vent

Hi Brian,

You could also do what my wife and I did. We bought a CO detector/alarm from Home Depot and installed it in our Little Guy 6 Wide, just to be on the safe side. We installed it on the converter housing which is in the middle of our cabin under the cabinets. It was only about a $17.00 investment.

Be safe and enjoy your camping experience!

I wanna hang a map of the world in my house. Then I'm gonna put pins into all the locations that I've traveled to. But first, I'm gonna have to travel to the top two corners of the map so it won't fall down.

to keep fresh air moving through(cut condensation/no co2), i mounted a 4"computer fan on the galley wall, then mounted a small squirrel cage fan from an oven range under the galley shelf in the back to push the air out of a dryer vent cut into the rear side wall.

a window a/c unit wont bring in fresh air, the intake is on the front of the unit, so it will just recirculate the same air...the vents on the sides and rear of it just allow cooling air to flow across the condensor and internal plumbing

i leave a vent in the front cracked so i have a constant cycle of fresh air.

if you have the roof vent popped, your camper wont kill you, but with that many people in it, the condensation created might kill the camper...
