Opinions on Generac iX2000?

I have a chance to pick up a very lightly used Generac iX2000 generator for $350. I already have a 3500 watt old/big/noisy/heavy Kohler generator for home power back up already... the Generac would be for occasional portable & camping use and as a backup/extra at home.

If you have one or have used one, what do you think? I am particularly interested in the noise level... I know the Hondas are well regarded in that area but they are pricey (I had been trolling for a Honda EU2000 when I found the Generac.) This is not a NEED purchase for me.

...just a reminder...a 1000w gennie is kinda light in the a$$ for doing much more than charging a battery or running a few lights...it wont run a coffee make or a hair dryer or even a 5000btu AC...just something to keep in mind.........

I've run a 5000btu AC unit on a Honda EU1000i inverter. Maybe I got lucky, and have one with soft start installed. I know it starts easier than the cheap chest freezer I also use. I can run both on the EU2000 if I start the freezer first. I have to stop both freezer and AC if I want to use the microwave, however.

Since he already picked up the EU1000, its a moot point.

I use my 5000 btuh A/C as a exercise load for my Yamaha 1000. It will start it without a hitch (eco mode off) when I first turn the the A/C on but the generator goes into overload if the A/C cycles on and off after it has run for awhile. I just turn it up so cold it doesn't cycle and it runs fine. I also turn eco mode back on after it has started the A/C. I'll run it on the kill-a-watt and get some load readings sometime. We also run the wife's hairdryer (on low) and the Keurig coffee maker (600Watts). A 1000 is a great generator if you pick the right appliances to go with it.

I'll try and remember to get the data the next time I go out to the farm. One thing I didn't mention is that I set the AC to low cooling before I tried to start it. I'll put the power meter on the AC and start it up in both high and low cooling, and see what the difference is.

...thanks...a 1000w gennie puts out enough power to run an AC but, often has problem starting it going, which often runs 2r3 times as much amperage...hence, the soft start options requiring lower amps....

1000 watt isn't bad. Something also to remember is that is peak. Its really only a 900 watt generator that can handle a 1000 watt surge. That isn't all that much.. Your talking a little over 7 amps with a little over 8 amp surge My honda 2000I is the same way. They call it a 2000watt generator but running watts is only 1600. I'm very glad I didn't go any smaller. Heck sometimes I wish mine was more like 2500 watts. If you ever want to use it to run power tools or other uses you figure out anything less then 15+ amps isn't great

I didn't have my Kill-a-volt out at the farm, so I couldn't do a startup test on the AC unit. The plate on it says its a Haier 5000btu, 515 watt, seer 9.3 unit.

The tag number I have (AD0A12E0200AG54L2203) doesn't bring anything up in Google. Didn't see a model number on the tag, or I missed it.

...that make it about 4+amp draw, double that for startup and you are right at the limit of a 1k gennie...long as it works is all that counts

I was out at the property this weekend, and fired up the AC. On the low setting, starting watts were in the 400-500 range. High range was around 1,000 or more watts. One thing I checked... start on low, then switch to high. Not a big bump in watts to switch over.

I don't know if this unit has a soft start built in, or if its the way its built, but I really like it. It was the cheapest one I could find at the time. (several years ago)

Anyway... just thought I would post an update.
