A question about shelters for the teardrop

Postby Mayberryman » Tue Jul 26, 2011 7:36 pm

I know that a lot of people use the "Easy-Up" types of shelters to park their tear or part of their tear under when camping. I have helped put up a lot of different "Easy Ups" when going to the races with the modified team that I work with, however have never seen one that just one person can put up.
I remember years ago that most any WalMart type store carried a cheap little shelter that was about 10 by 10 and had a center pole as well as the four poles at the corners. Since I camp alone most of the time (wife thinks that Holiday Inn is ruffing it) I am looking for a shelter that is both light weight and easy for one person to put up. If I could find one of the cheap units I spoke about I was thinking about getting a welding shop to tac some rebar onto tubes large enough for the poles to fit inside and hammer them into the ground so that putting it up would become a one man job.

Any solutions or ideas where I can find that cheap shelter would be most appreciated.

I think you will find most EZ-Up style shelters can be put up by one person. But it is hard. I have an actual EZ-UP 10 X 10 and have set it up myself several times. But it takes time. I walk around and pull out each leg a few inches at a time. Some people stake one leg down and then walk around opening the shelter. Once it is about 3/4 of the way open I crawl under it and push up on the ceiling arms and I'm home free. Then it is easy to finish on my own. Best I can tell you is the real cheap shelters don't seem to fair well in the wind, and some are not very waterproof as well.

P.S. I think we have the same wife

I have a 15x15 coleman event shelter and I can put it up by my self. Have to stand on a cooler to reach the straps on the inside.

I have a 10 X 10 Karavan brand pop-up that I've had for 7+ years and I can put it up single handedly.

As someone said, stake down one corner and drag it out from there.

I do what guitar does, I have a 10x10 coleman and stake the corner and pull it out. I would say it was lighter weight than the EZup brand, but better quality than the wally world brands that tend to taco.

What we need is an ez up rodeo.
A timed study with a witness.

I was up early at the CRA gathering and had not gotten the 10 x 10 first up pitched the night we arrived. So I decided to get it in place over the chuckwagon to give some shade later in the day. It was early and it was something I could do quietly by myself. Just balanced it on 1 leg and pulled it out as far as possible. Then walked around and pulled out , tossed on the top and extened the legs. Walking it 15 feet and lifting it over the open hatch was a bit of a pain but with a bit of patients they can be erected and taken down alone.

...yep, by yourself is doable, the secret is to get one leg anchored...after that, the rest is fairly easy......

Or forget the frame entirely and go with tarps. Compass Rose has Kedar/awning rail on three sides and three tarps that attach. The rear one is 14' long 14' wide at the widest (6' at the tear) and can be fully up or down depending on camp site or weather. The one was made by Paha Que' Design.

Coleman makes this sun shade with poles. They also have a 2-pole version.

Way back in the last century I had a shade like you described the one with a pole in the center,
trouble was over time the center needed to be raised higher and higher as the canvas stretched after a while it did not cover much space at all.
I have a 10X10 ez-up I set up by myself like others have said it can be done but two or three extra people makes for an easier job.

the real shelters like used by sales people at craft fairs etc, have a type that has one pole in the middle with a t handle on the bottom of it in the middle after it opens to a certain point you stand in the middle and push that pole up and the rest opens. I watched someone setting up for a fair with one years ago, didn't mean much to me then now I would like to know who made it and how much it cost (not cheap I am sure)

iSpy, forget the shelter I want your rig!! Got any more pictures of it?

I do use a Caravan Brand 10 x 10 and do the stake one leg down thing. However, I just noticed at our Costco here in Atlanta that they have a new shelter that seems to be a little lighter but sturdy and has a newer design on the posts that allow for easier clicking into position as you raise them. Mine has the older design with the push in pins that are a pain. They were selling them for $188 with the side panels!
