Oh boy, oh boy. I know I'm not the only person in Texas who checks the NOAA National Hurricane Center Web site and follows up with the Jeff Masters blog at Weather Underground (scroll down to see a picture of Invest 90L) to see if anything is happening -- AND there is a nice orange circle between the Yucatan and Cuba, headed west northwest. A Hurricane Hunter flight is headed there tomorrow to check it out. How cool is that? Yes, it is that dry in Texas. A nice tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico sounds good right about now.

Still early but chances of tropical cyclone formation have gone up to 70% this morning, with early models showing landfall somewhere on the Texas coast -- like between Brownsville and Galveston.

I think those who entertain encouraging thoughts about a tropical storm coming for a visit have serious mental health issues.

With that having been said…I myself had a childhood accident resulting in drain bamage.

3:08 Texas time and it is nearing 100% -- the circle indicating the storm has turned to red.
An air force reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is currently enroute to investigate the area...and if it confirms the presence of a circulation...advisories will be initiated this afternoon.
Interests in the central and western gulf of Mexico should monitor this system as it moves /west-northwestward near 15 mph. This system has a high chance...near 100 percent..of becoming a tropical
cyclone during the next 48 hours.

I think what was meant is that this a drought vs storm situation. In many parts of the country there is a desperate need for rain.

We are hoping .and praying...

Postby Txbum » Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:31 pm

JuneBug, we are hoping and praying for the water , not necessarily high winds or tornadic activity. We sure could use some rain, our local farmers and ranchers are in desparate need of water , as is all of Texas. So , JuneBug we are with you.....Richard & Mary Jane......TxBum :worship:

Tropical Storm Don has been born off the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and should make landfall (as a hurricane?) along the parched Texas coast on Friday evening or night. Bring it! Our last strong rain in central Texas was one intensely rainy day from a tropical storm in late Sept/early Oct 2010
Even if the storm does not drive far enough inland to bring us relief, someone will get desperately needed rain.

Thanks for your kind words, TxBum. It seems like about two weeks ago things reached some kind of critical point, where grass, trees and plants are just burning up and the trees, even with some water, are looking extremely stressed. I hope the ranchers & farmers can hang on for a bit more. This is a truly heartbreaking situation for so many.

You are so right!

JuneBug, your welcome. I remember the last soaking event! I was at PINS ( Padre Island National Seashore) camping with family. The waves were unusally high and the waters edge closer to the dunes than in the past. My cousins said it will ok. So we set up camp, cooked , enjoyed the high surf. Late at night the winds picked up even stronger and then the rain came in..from where we asked?..In the morning we found out! We had parked our rig near the dunes, away from water's edge, about 100 yds. The next morning we were awaken by low flying Coast Guard choppers blaring out warnings to " wake up get off the island!! A Tropical storm is in Brownsville heading north.." I looked out and WOW the water is now at my rear bumper of the tow vehicle. I scramble to load up and leave! Yet I stayed..I have to help my cousins. They set up for a week's worth of fishing and camping. Man, we load everything, and cut it close. All I wanted to do is get on solid pavement. Tropical storm Hermine is close by. I never correlated the unusally high winds and surf to this storm. We had no clue there was a storm brewing, I found out later the NWS ( national weather service) was caught by surprise. The local radio stations we also caught off guard, hence no warnings. From now on, bringing a weather alert radio. A silver lining though, we got some ( a lot ) of rain, and the local towing services made a killing. Some people camped by waters edge were now inundated, their tents, campers, rv , vehicles stuck like chuck. Tents, BBQ pits, gas grills, ATV, under water and sinking fast. We were able to boost start some people that ran the vehicle's battery down during the night. Some we helped push/pull out. Many were towed by professional towing and paid dearly..$400.00 plus just to pavement! If your rig was wet ..oh well , pay up any way. Next time? Weather searches!! Txbum...Richard.. :o

That is a great beach story and good for you for the kindness you showed to family and strangers alike. You'll never forget Hermine!
Looks like Don has stood us up and will make landfall on a more southerly track, south of Corpus Christi. Should be great surfing in the PINS area.
My brother + grandkids will be in Rockport on Monday for a few days. Bet the surf will be up and looks like the coastal temps will be knocked down to mid 90s for a bit; I'm temped to join them. We're looking at 30% chance of rain and a high of 106 by midweek and you likely will have similar.

Spoke with a relative who lives out in the country near Cuero. In the last few days she found a copperhead on the top step of her wooden porch and another one climbing a tree in the yard. I think the ground is so hot that they are trying to get up higher to get any kind of relief. This year she has seen more snakes and earlier in the year than at any time in the past.

Well the "next big thing" is a low pressure system off the Lesser Antilles. Until then......

JuneBug, hot it is and it is fun to watch the birds and the bees fly nearby when I turn the sprinkler on during the evening hours. If your family is going to Rock Port I am sure they will have fun. I only wish there was a beach to camp on. Goose Island State Park has water front sites. Are you planning to attend Loyd Park event this year? TxBum
