Summer Tear Trip

Thought I would post here for grins a giggles, but just a link to my Picasa photos. The highlight of the trip was the last night wilderness camping on the Sonoran pass (Hwy 108) in the Sierra's. Enjoy!

Nice pictures John. There was snow when we stayed at Lassen right after the first IRG 1.0 but not that much. Oregon sure is pretty sometimes I miss not living there anymore. I used to venture out in my old 1953 chevy pick up and drive on some old logging roads and see some amazing scenery.

It's a great spot, though hot mid summer and can be windy in the spring. Head up the road to Whitney Portal, abut 3 miles out of town turn north on Movie Flat Road, go past the end of the pavement and find a spot. It's BLM, you can camp anywhere, but no camp fires and there's no water or toilets (bring a poo bag). You'll also need a California camp fire permit, you can get one at the Whitney/Death Valley visitor's center just south of Lone Pine.

The only problem is that it's close to Edwards, seems the F-18s were practicing for the spring offensive with a B1 circling higher up and I think we were the painted target on the ground. It was cool at first but those things are kind of loud when they go over at 500', it got old after awhile.

Neither of the two trips (Owens Valley in the spring, Lassen in July) were particularly cold, but at times windy. All our camp sites were fairly well sheltered and the wind died down in the evenings. It was, however, unusually cool for July in north eastern California. We came back into connectivity to learn the rest of the country was hotter than...
