Northern tool 5*8 1980GWR on sale @499 with free shipping

It seem to be of better quality and once you add the fact it has free shipping, it does not cost more than the 4*8 1720GWR HF trailer.

Did anybody use that trailer ? any good ?

If yes, can it be lowered like it's done for the harbor freight trailers ?

Also for the harbor freight trailers, can they be picked p at a store or is it delivery only .

If delivery only, how long does it take ?

Thoughts

If you scrounge up used rims and tires, network a bit and find someone who can cut and weld, shop around a bit for good prices, you can build a better frame, with a better axle, and have brakes for not much more than this frame costs.

If you scrounge harder you could probably do it for less. Look on www.craiglook.com there are several old travel trailers in your area that could be recycled into a teardrop frame.

Ask yourself what your trailer is gonna weigh when loaded for the road. What are you towing it with and should you have brakes.

Read: http://tnttt.com/viewto ... highlight=

If you plan on beefing up the trailer, as others have suggested/found necessary, I think the advantages of using the advertised trailer pretty much disappear. With a good saw and mig machine a good frame takes a day to lay out and weld up.

Look at all the issues and then decide what is the "best" approach and trailer for YOU.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

The Northern Trailer looks like a much better choice than the HF trailer, assuming you can get it for about the same money

For one, the Northern is 5 X 8 and the HF only 4 X 8. For another, the Northern Trailer has a 2,000 pound axle, the HF doesn't. If the Northern has a Reliable axle (like the ones Northern sells separately) then it's a standard 1 inch axle and will take standard 1 inch hubs and bearings. There is nothing *standard* about the HF trailer - The axle, hubs and bearings are all wierd metric sizes, slightly smaller (and weaker) than true 1 inch units . . . . plus, parts for HF hubs and axles are nearly impossible to find unless you buy spares directly from HF - If you need a new bearing while you're out on the road someplace, you'd bertter hope you broke down in a HF parking lot . . . . if not, good luck!

I built on a #1740 HF frame - I'm now in the process of changing out the axle with a standard Reliable from Northern Tool. It's quite a process since the *standard* width for a 4 foot trailer axle has spring perches welded on 48 inch centers . . . . the HF frame uses 46 1/2 inch centers, so I had to cut off the spring perches and reweld them back on 46 1/2 inch centers so the new axle will fit the non-standard HF frame

Our local Harbor Freight store does not stock the heavy duty trailer. We asked if we could order through the store and pick it up there. She said stores do not order things. They can only be ordered through the internet. I asked if we could order it through the internet and have it delivered to the store with no shipping charges. Nope. Internet order, ship to the house, pay shipping. That's the only way they do it. At least at the store in Baltimore.

The Northern Tool trailer is currently $529.00, and now sports an "A" tongue. A pretty good deal, but not as good as building your own.
God Bless
