looking for movie suggestions

Postby nevadatear » Mon Aug 22, 2011 12:31 am

we can debate whether or not watching movi's while camping is "camping" or not forever, but for us, having a few videos for those rainy nights has been one of the surprisingly good perks of our td. so that debate aside, we are looking for some easy watching movie suggestions that might be found in the clearance bin at the local walmart or equivalent,

okays: romance, comedy, western, old movies, mystery, musicals, not too sad dramas (it is a vacation after all). Feel good movies.

not okays: horror, graphic war or other graphic violence, scary, too sad drama-again,this is camping after all. I need movies i can fall asleep with or after. also not a fan of cartoon or graphic adventure, although movies like national treasure or Hidalgo are fine. Not a fan of "coming of age" movies, or stupid high school humor aimed at pubescent boys or girls. At least not of this decade. Classic 50s movies are another story.

Thanks for any suggstions!

You may want to try pawn shops as well. In my area 6 movies for $10 is the going sales price.....hard to beat! Normally have several thousand movies to choose from as well.
Even those souls that are found must occasionally become lost to appreciate what they have.

I like to take favorite movies that bear re-watching with me. Same with books. That way, you know what to expect--familiar, cozy things are nice when you're away from home, and if you don't get around to watching them it's no big deal--you don't feel as though you have to make time like you might with a new movie. (or novel)

I'm 48 years old and I like cartoons. (does that sound like an admission or a boast?)

Shrek (the first one) is an old favorite, Iron Giant is exciting and warm-hearted, Up, Wall-E, The Incredibles are all amazing movies not just good cartoons. Triplets of Bellevue is a personal favorite--kookie French cartoon about bicycling and gangsters with almost no dialogue. Great music, too...

Not sure you'll find it in the dollar bin, but "The Notebook" is a really great movie... came out 7 or 8 years ago.

Also, "P.S. I Love You", which is about 5 years old.

Oh, and "Time Traveller's Wife" (2009)

If you haven't seen those, get them. The wife will love them! And from a guys perspective, they are pretty good for being "chick flicks".

I hear "Deliverance" is a good one too.

First date with my wife of 38 years was to the movie "Kelly's Heros". After the movie I walked her back to her dorm and then I went back immediately to watch the movie again. Only movie I ever did that with.

Best movie of all time is "Casablanca". I can watch that again and again. Bogart is awesome.

I just bought a boxed set of 600 old TV westerns from the 50's and 60's. Most of them are in B/W. A lot of fun to watch.

I picked up a Sherlock Holmes series at Walgreens the other night, 39 episodes on DVD for $7.99 in a tin box.

Big Business with Lily Tomlin and Bette Midler (One scene had me laughing so hard my sides hurt and had tears in my eyes.) :applause:

The Magnificent Seven with Steve Mcqueen, Yul Brynner

Three Amigos With Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Steve Martin

Rio Bravo With John Wayne

Jules Verne Mysterious Island (The original released in 1961 not the remake with Patrick Stewart)

Do not watch Hachi: A Dog's Tale. A great movie but way to sad. (Makes me almost want to tear up just typing this.) Even sadder than Disney's Old Yellow
(Had to warn you just in case)

Loved The Notebook! I still have it in my camper. I know you said nothing scary but I love Alfred Hitchcock movies and The Twilight Zone. But I refuse to watch Kujo! No thank you!! My dad scared the living hell out of me and my best friend when we were only 12 by acting like a crazy, mad dog. Late one night he was hiding in the bushes after my friend and I went feed the hunting dogs. He came running behind us as we got closer to the house, barking and growling like an insane person. Nope, I will never watch Kujo (again)!!

This may sound strange, but our favorite DVDs to take camping, are TV Series. We pick series that we've never seen, but wish we had...or previous seasons of the ones we just started watching. TV series are great because you can watch just one episode (if it's been a long day) or you can have a marathon and watch several episodes (if it's raining and you have nothing to do).
Happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.

A few years ago, Target had old TV shows on dvd in their dollar bin by the door. I didn't get any of them and regret it. They would have been fun to watch while we are on vacation.

We bought the move "UP" when it was new and finally got around to watching it. It makes you laugh and tear up a bit. It's a cute movie.

We've discovered the value of Red Box on our last vacation. We watch Gnomeo & Juliet and laughed ourselves silly. We're usually in town picking up ice so there's a Red Box someplace close. Hey, it's only a buck!
