HF trailer tow speed

Postby chartle » Mon Aug 22, 2011 2:56 pm

OK been lurking a few days and have my first real question.

I have looked at HF trailers ever since they started to open stores around Pittsburgh. First as a camping cargo trailer and now as a pie in the sky TD. (I don't even have a place to build it.)

The issue I have is the HF manual clearly states it has a 45 mph speed limit. Is this one of those CYA kind of things or a real issue. I'm not going to be going 85 mph but if I pull it to FL , in some states, anything under 60 to 65 mph and you get run over.

I would be looking at the 4 x 8 trailer and putting a 5 by 8 foot to be named later box on it. With a low weight design i.e no water tanks and cabinets made out of lighter wood than oak.

thanks

Thats just one of those disclaimers.

The bearings in the hubs (if properly cleaned and greased) will easily handle twice that. Its your tires that won't.

You should be able to do 65 without any problems. I've towed my trailer with the cruise control set at 70mph before.

And one time, I went a bit faster to catch up to my group. Lets just say that if my tow vehicle was a Delorean, I'd be going back to the future, with teardrop in tow. Would I suggest doing that?! HECK NO!!

Well the more I read how hard it is to register a kit trailer in PA, the more I think I want a Tractor Supply pre built that has a 60 mph limit.

Thats definitely a good option!

Heres my experience from registering my trailer in PA last spring:

Another easier option is to register the trailer in Maine, as a non-resident:

I have had no problems with my HF trailer.
I have the folding 4 x 8 model.
I use it for work hauling tools and building supplies.
I don't like pick up trucks and use this in a trucks place. I drive with it on a daily basis and have gone on road trips hauling loads.
I do 70 on the highway with no problems.
I have had this for about five years, I am on the second set of tires and the original bearings.
It has been a great trailer for me.

Its been discussed alot on this forum. If you think about what the trailer's purpose is for, it makes some sense. Its a utility trailer, which means being pulled with nothing on it.

I know when I've first assembled my trailers and pulled them down to the store to get wood, the trailer would bounce like crazy with no load on it.

So I could imagine that, yes 45-55 is all the faster you would want to go pulling just the trailer frame. But with several hundred pounds on it, its a different story. No problem going highway speeds.
