Are you thinking about renting something just to test it before you build, or before you buy, or thinking "is this the way I really want to camp"? A quality rental for an incident free experience might give you a better idea if you are thinking about buying a manufactured or custom built one. That being said...I have camped with Vacations in a Can builder, Joe a number of times. His stuff is top notch as is the Camp Inn products! There are other builders on the forum that turn out incredible well built/designed/custom tears as well. Check with Halfdome Danny and Prohandyman.
If you were to pick up (buy) a relatively inexpensive build, you would at least get the basics of teardrop camping, but may have some issues dealing with a build that wasn't thought out very well or had funky quality. Not saying that would happen, but it could. At least you would get the education on what you are looking for and could probably turn it. Not all teardrops are created equally.
Read as much as you can on the forum as it's full of info to really help you in deciding on what might be right for you. Just an idea. Doug
