galley design

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Postby Oldragbaggers » Thu Sep 01, 2011 10:13 pm

Tom and dh, you both bring up excellent points about the importance of knowing "how you camp." I have been considering my galley design a lot here recently and I think I haven't given enough thought to it from that perspective.

We don't really consider ourselves "campers" either, and it is not our goal to become campers for the sake of camping. We would probably never visit a remote campsite unless we had a compelling reason, like a gathering, or unless it was our only, or most convenient, option.

What we like to do is TRAVEL, and we like to ride our bicycles in new places (roads, paths and rail/trails, not switchbacks). Our teardrop will be taking the place of hotel rooms and, to some extent, restaurants as we go from one place to the next and we would be more likely to look for an RV park with a clubroom, nice bath house and pool than a remote campground. (That leads me to another question, but I'll save that for another thread.)

So now I am wondering why I hadn't even considered a microwave, a full sink, ( or a TV/DVD player) before, now that I realize I would most certainly have electricity, and access to city water, nearly all of the time.

I will be scrapping my current plan and starting over, thanks to your valuable insight. (Man, I LOVE this forum!!)

One subject that has been beat around plenty, is whether or not to add a sink. I've had tears back to like '80 and only had 1 with a sink in it, an original '49 Kit. I only stored junk in the sink. For me, it just seemed to cut into the counter space which was more desirable than a hole for water.

Like mentioned, think about how you camp, many of us find a dish pan a better option over a built in sink. For dish washing, I find that the tear sized sinks are too small to be of much use. It does cut in to storage with the drain and possible water storage. I'm not a sink fan in a tear, did put one in my standy, but only use it occasionally. On board water also adds 8# per gallon.

I do put in a stove, on a slider so it's not tucked in the galley when cooking for splatter protection. For galley layout, pick out the important big pieces, like a stove and cooler...position them, then build out and fit in the cabinetry you will want to fit for the rest of the open space. Just an idea, I'm sure others will disagree on the sink thing. Doug

Points well taken, Doug.

You know what they say, "opinions are like belly buttons, everybody has one,." But I would say there's some good belly buttons around here.

I'm solving the sink eating counter space by placing it smack in the center, and making a 2 piece maple butcher block that will fit over it, so the sink becomes very usable counter space, or just half the sink can be exposed. Also, I'm not cooking gourmet meals in the thing, just quick heat 'em and eat 'em's or boiling some noodles and nuking some spaghetti sause. Again, it depends how you camp. Also, my TV has verrylimited room, so one less thing to carry, in there is huge.

Hey Bob, notice in all your pics not one single item is being cooked IN the galley?

I really like the idea of the stove not being inside, but on the door. Less grease getting into the td/ttt. Since I havent built my galley box yet bobhenry really has me thinking.

For the first time ever we used the bat wing tables and
wash station at the Crossroads of america gathering
that I had installed on the chuckwagon.

We had prep table then the cook stove in the chuck
wagon and cleanup all in a straight line. It had the
flow of a commercial kitchen.

The little 4x7 has NO galley other than the very same
bat wing tables and I feel it will still be a great little
food prep area. The total lack of storage is the only
drawback.

How do most people attach the bat wings to the wall? Is it just a plain C-channel using pins and holes in the table top? And where do you store the table surfaces when not in use?

Thanks for the link, I really like the folding/collapsing camping stove shelf in the 'gallery 009' series.

I just got the rails and table off a junked pop-up camper. There is usually one in the kitchen and one on the outside by the door.

I have seen them for sale separately from tear-drop suppliers.

Storage? Just fold it down and throw it on the bed! (or I suppose your tow rig if there is room)

As to storage.... ditto , toss it on the bed. You could add under frame storage rack or as I did designed a " basement " with rear access.
