teardrop materials for a steel and aluminum rig

Postby gene so » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:39 am

Hello,

I'm designing a custom teardrop with a lowered, wider frame. Years ago I built a lightweight trailer of 2 x 2 x .125 steel and it was absolutely great.........till a huge oak tree fell on it!
Now I am retired to northern New Mexico, from Seattle. Finding materials to create this trailer cheaply there, with Boeing in the neighborhood, was no problem. Finding materials here in New Mexico can be done but the costs are ridiculous.
Therefore I am determined to acquire the materials I need: 2 x 2 square steel tubing, aluminum checker plate and also aluminum sheeting somewhere I can get it at a good price. if I have to spend the savings on the price of gas to travel to obtain what I need, then so be it! If there is a supply of these types of materials somewhere in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado or Arizona which is somewhat close to the New Mexican border, please let me know. If there are "teardroppers" from Kansas who are aware of the Boeing facilities in that state, as to whether they have a Boeing Surplus similar to the one in Seattle, I would appreciate hearing about that. if I have dropped the ball and there is a good steel and aluminum supplier in New Mexico that does not charge a gazillion I wouldn't mind finding out about such a facility, but I seriously doubt such a facility exists.

The members of this site have been very gracious with their information and I would deeply appreciate any info you have on this since it would turn a dream into a reality this winter.

Thanks,

Gene So

I'm sure a few google searches could get you a phone number for the Boeing plant in Wichita...

Have you looked for a used steel dealer? There is one in Memphis I've used before. They had some good stuff, no full sticks, but a good selection of structural steel.
