Very Good loking Standie

Postby iiibonesairforce » Mon Sep 12, 2011 10:27 pm

 Mike GREAT LOOKING Standie despite some of the setbacks you endured. This is going to be my project. Can't wiat to get few projects out of the way first, then start compiling my list. I plan on lighting the trailer with home configured LED lighting. It comes in all colors of the rainbow and it consumes 10% of the energy regualr lights consume.

Any idea where I can find a rough trailer wiring diagram. One for 12 V and another for a 110 system. Sorry if this is not the place to ask about wiring.

you might think about doing a timelaps movie of your build.

When you get done it should be interesting to see what the tung weight is as well as weight of the intire trailer.

We all have those foamy trailers it is the insolation in our walls

Nice job easy to follow with out reading every thing. How did you fix the crack just glue it or did you put some reinforcement dowel or some such thing in the board? By the time it is done it should be as stiff as a corvette body. It will also be interesting to see how much better the gas milage is pulling this one as compaired to other standies or even your teardrop
Where is mine is to heavy I am looking at a used 4runner or tacoma to pull it with. Must say that is tempting. thanks for the look into a new world of TTT making.

foam is found on buildings look at the Home Depot the fancy designs are made of foam on top.

There are many designs you could do on yours to make them look very ornate and still be light.

Mike,

How are you planning to finish the inside of the roof?

I was thinking of installing some 5mm flooring underlayment (about $11.25 per 4'X8' sheet at Home Depot, it looks almost like a mahogany plywood) over the spars and the top of the walls. The 2" foam would be kerfed and glued to the exterior side of the 5mm ply. That way the roof would be finished on the inside and the kerf cuts would not show. The kerfs would still need to be filled on the edges of the trailer before the outer canvas skin in applied.

Thanks for all the comments and compliments.

And now to answer a couple questions...

DJT wrote:That looks great Mike!

Have you decided on interior covering yet?

Plan on covering it with canvas and paint!

GPW wrote:Mike , are you going to fill in the exposed kerf cut holes on the ends ??? Maybe just put the “reinforcing strips over that , then cover it over with the outside canvas ... ?

I just bought two more containers of vinyl spackling. I plan on filling in the ends of the kerfs before I cover it with canvas. I also plan on filling in the seams between the pieces too!

I plan on doing the inside with canvas and paint too. I don't think we are going to do anything with the kerfs on the inside. They will show through the canvas a little bit, but it shouldn't be too bad.

I think I will cut the canvas into 2 1/2 foot wide pieces and just cover one section and two spars at a time.

Mike...

Mike,

Way to go "all in" with the canvas/paint. I was thinking about going with the 5mm ply on the inside walls as well as the ceiling, but after seeing how nice the painted canvas is I am starting to rethink that plan. I still like I will use ply on the ceiling to have some color and texture variation.

Since it is canvas, maybe it screams for some original art on the walls!

I think it goes without saying that your trailer is looking great. I have been watching your thread since you started and it has inspired me to use the same techniques.

Structural consideration for hand-hold

Postby Tiredoldwhiteman » Wed Sep 14, 2011 10:06 pm

Mike,

Just curious...Have you given consideration to the structural necessity to properly carry an exterior door hand-hold? Do you suppose the door frame has enough strength to carry a hand-hold?

I have been giving some thought to this and in lieu of a fixed hand-hold, constructing a small, fold-able, portable bannistered stairway may be a viable alternative (a small, two-step version along these lines:
http://www.zorinmaterial.com/products/p ... product=85).

Thanks for the updates on an excellent project. Keep up the good work.

Now back to the Peanut Gallery...

nice work. i'm concidering a composit standie for my next build. basicly a foamie. with 1/4 skin of marine grade mahogany just for looks. though it would certainly add strength too.
would love to stop by sometime to see your work. i live in oxford just north of you.
oh and the truck parts place on m24 sometimes has odd windows from caps and stuff.

Tks, GPW...I'm finally arriving at that conclusion; I just need to learn to trust the foaminess of it all...

Thinking about a design taking off (nearly identical copy, to be honest) of the "Little Gem (http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=41702)." That little gem of a TT just begs to be foamed...

Much left to learn...Maybe. Maybe not...Only time will tell...
