aunti m. ever get a new teardrop afer the tornado?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

 No problem Rob. Joplin has a lot of work for those who can do it outside. It has been very hot here so not everyone can take advantage.

Our residential permits are way up but a lot of people were under-insured or not insured at all. Were it not for the 60,000+ volunteers we had very little would be done! A lot of volunteers are helping people recover their damaged homes too. Not a lot of new construction yet! IN Duquesne where our other house was at there are a lot of new houses going up. Most of the area was completely destroyed.

As for picking out stuff 8) we are putting the bulk of money into structure....Good windows and insulation. The rest will come after. Oh and a very good tornado shelter in the basement..... :worship:

Rob the shelter will be built in place. My understanding is reinforced concrete walls and ceiling in the basement, then the house built on top of it! We started to put it under the garage but I want it close to the stairs. Mike barely made it to the basement this time. We have a corner where it can be put and should be 6' x 10' ish to make the walls easy. Pretty big so we will probably stock it well. Stormy nights we can just sleep in the basement.

 I think we settled on a 1/2 bath under the basement stairs too so extra safe space if needed.

Aunti M & family,
Best wishes for a speedy and smooth building process. Looks like a great house plan.
So sad to see the teardrop wrecked  , but good it can be a help during cleanup.

Take care,

Miriam,

Sounds like a good plan.

We've installed some underground, and above ground shelters here in Illinois.
I'm not sure I trust the above ground shelters, and the below grade shelters leak (at least the two piece fiberglass that we tried).

A basement shelter would be my first choice too!
If you can afford to increase the size a little, it would be a great place to keep all those canned goods and supplies.
Since you're building new, you could make it a safe room too.

A few years ago a tornado took out most of a small town near us.
In the downtown area, the only thing left standing was a reinforced concrete box...the bank's vault.
It was above ground.
If you make one below ground...you should be able to rest easy!

Miriam:

Good Luck!!! I certainly hope you only need the safe room for warnings, and no more tornados.

Sorry you lost your home...

Postby kayakrguy » Mon Sep 12, 2011 8:14 pm

Hi Miriam,

We were devastated to find out you had lost your home in the tornadoes in Joplin. We haven't been on the board for a long time (long story) Your loss brings to mind our run through your area when we were returning from Sante Fe back to NJ and contacted you about dropping in to say 'Hello'. We were trying to outrun Hurricane Ike coming in from the Gulf-TX panhandle and decided to bypass a stay in Joplin--because of the possibility of tornadoes from the storm! I am quasi terrified of tornadoes--having lived through a near miss in my uncle's car as a young kid....whew!

We're glad to hear you're in recovery mode with building plans, new house chosen etc. Nance wants to know what happened to your quilting stuff--your 'stash', sewing machine, quilts, supplies etc and if we can do any thing to help you get back to 'normal' with those things.

Enuf for now. Blessings to the clan,

Jim and Nancy Woods

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

Jim and Nanc...most of my quilting stuff is gone. I had put a lot of my books and fabric in a storage unit and it was broken into and what wasn't stolen was burned....yes burned....creeps :x

My sewing machine is safely in Springfield MO in storage thank God! The books I am still looking for replacements....Used book stores tend to have a wonderful stash. Just have to wait on most until the house is done. The sewing room will be in the basement too 8)

Miriam,
Glad to hear your house is getting figured out.

Sorry to hear what happened to your quilting stuff. Hard to believe with what happened in your area that anyone would brake in and steal things, much less burn them.

But I guess there are bad people everywhere.

Wishing you all the best.
Martha ;)

Miriam,
Thankfully you and your family are safe. It looks as if things might be beginning to return to some normalcy. When that nice house is occupied it will be a big move forward. I find the house very attractive. I especially like the color.
You are often in our thoughts and prayers. God speed.
