Slow,

 The lady at CR England may be misinformed or may not understand enough to be able to explain it to you. The law may only apply to truck drivers and it may have to do with not having had any driving practice for 6 months. At least, that would make sense. After all you don't want a loaded semi on the road with a truck driver at the wheel who is rusty or doesn't remember how to drive the thing. That would be like giving a toddler a loaded gun to play with. Maybe, if a truck driver is unemployed for 6 months, he has to re-take the driving test or take a refresher course or something?

Helping your parents is most admirable; and, when the time is right, the Good Lord will reward you. Just be certain that you can take care of yourself as well.

slow, slow down son, you are cutting your own throat...I can tell you for a fact, as a life long trucker, that law has been in effect since at least the start of the CDL system...ALL truckers are required to document employment history and have been for at least 25yrs...it is a law, which was pushed by the insurance industry to insure truckers were up to date of recent regulations and that their driving skils are up to par...much as Sharon had alluded to...CR England is a top notch company and is doing NOTHING WRONG other than complying with a 25+ yr old Federal Law...while I applaud your dedication to the folks, that is no reason to let your bad feelings towards the Fed Govt keep you from your dream of being a long haul trucker...that is just plain silly son...PLAIN SILLY I say!!!!!!!!!

There is a new trend of hiring that believes that no one should be hired if they are unemployed - there must be some reason why they are unemployed - so companies that adhere to that philosophy won't hire anyone unless they are "Risk Free"

I haven't been around long, so maybe it's just me, and perhaps I should reserve comment until I have some tenure here. Not being particularly shy or introverted, here goes anyway

Carl, you just need to learn how to read slow...then it all makes sense ;)
...back to the subject...when this rule was instituted for the trucking industry, along with the CDL, it was meant to weed out truckers who had multiple licenses or who just ran outlaw...something which was a real problem at the time...to cover gaps in my employment history, I just told 'em I was "self employed" and only worked for cash...I got the "eye" a few times but it always satisfied the requirements...........

I've been driving trucks off and on all my life. I know when I retired that I could get a job anywhere anytime. A CDL and a clean record will get you a job, maybe not what you would want but a decent paycheck. The man I worked for the last couple years calls me everyweek to come in for a day or two. Sometimes I go sometimes not.
Cheer up Slow it's not as bad as you think. In fact come on out here to Va and I'll let you take my job for a while.

Carl, try reading between the lines to get a feel for the decent human behind the posts. It's not hard if you try.

Slow, have you told your dad about your job offer? It may make him more happy to see you live out your dreams than stick around for his sake. Who knows, you may find your future wife out there on the road.

If I remembered correctly the Feds have policies on the books that encourage hiring.

Check out: http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=220745,00.html

I put one on payroll last year under this policy. I am sure that there are more out there.

Carl,
Sometimes I read Slow's posts using the voice of Slim Pickins. It makes it easier to figure out sometimes.

Now and then, he brings up a good point and that's the important part. There really are nuggets of good stuff in his posts. The digging for them makes the reward that much more sadisfyin.

Slow,
Have a beer with your dad and see what he says. robertaw is right. In terms of getting hired, don't psych yourself out of something good. Talk to the company after you've taken a few deep breaths. See what they're really after. Not hiring someone because they're unemployed would really put the skids on the jobs program like the president is pushing right now. I doubt that's a mandate from the government right now.

If Slow doesn't take the job ,I think the forum should have the right to outlaw Slows comments about economy, no jobs, last job, and self employment activities

I vote not to take the job with JR England.

I realize slow's posts can be hard to wade through BUT, he is a member of our slightly wacky and unique teardrop family and just Like weird ol' Uncle Ernie it would diminish that family to exclude him...so, remember that, before you offer criticism and remember, it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round(and round)............

p.s. further negative comments will be dealt with appropriately and with LONG established board policy.............mj

Slow's comments are hard to get through at times, but I have no doubt that if any of us were in his part of the country and ran into difficulties, he would be one of the first people to offer to help.

We all need to remember that not everybody has had the same opportunities regarding education, career, etc. that some of us were fortunate to have had.

It's not a federal law keeping employers from hiring the long-term unemployed.
It's a safety requirement that long-haul truckers keep their CDLs current and their driving records clear.

I know some people will find that onerous but when sharing the road with a 100,000 pound truck-trailer combo, I fell *lots* better knowing the driver is properly qualified to manage that mass at those speeds.

Sorry if I sound political here. Some things NEED to be regulated so that EVERYBODY survives, not just the guys with the most $$$$.
