How loud is a WFCO Power Center?

Postby absolutsnwbrdr » Fri Sep 23, 2011 12:52 pm

I'm looking at the WFCO-8725 Power Center, and the most convenient place to install it in my new teardrop is going to be at the head of the sleeping area, in the floor, with the front panel facing upwards.

The only thing that should make any noise at all is the cooling fan. Right?

Anything moving causes minimal vibration. I would use rubbers washers under it to mount it to the subfloor and yes the fan is the only moving part in any power supply.

Just thought of something else. A contactor or big relay could possibly be used. Cheap relays or contactors can emit a buzzing sound, but I've never used the power supply in question

I have the 8725. I've only heard the fan once in several months.. when the battery had run down low when I FIrst hooked up the Converter. Since it's job is to keep the battery topped off when you are attached to shore power, you shouldn't hear the fan.
When it comes on.. it will last as long as the power is up charging the battery supply or using lot of 12v I'm thinking. The one time it ran that loud, It wasn't loud enough to bother anything IMO.

Installing it through the floor means all those wires beneath your trailer. make sure you enclose it all in conduit or other protective method to prevent snagging and scraping on metal as you travel.

Thanks guys.

Wolfscout - It won't actually hang below the trailer or be exposed. I am planning an electrical compartment in the front, and just decided that I might use the WFCO rather than the 5A Battery Tender that I have on my current trailer.

The WFCO will be mounted on supports from underneath (not shown below), and the compartment door will be able to flip up and down to allow for access to fuse blocks and other electronics I have planned. I am thinking I will only need minimal access to all this stuff, so I have it tucked under mattress. I will also put vents into this area so the WFCO doesn't overheat.

The fan on mine comes on only when I first power it up, either from 12VDC or from 120VAC. In my very hot, metal trailer, the WFCO fan hasn't come on during daily use (lights, fan, etc) since I installed it.

But, your mounting location isn't very convenient if you need to access the fuses or circuit breakers. I use one of the breakers in the WFCO as my main breaker, so turn it on and off from time to time.

Thanks Chas. I've never had to access the fuses/charger/electronics in my current teardrop, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I have the same luck in the new one. I was planning on having a on/off switch located outside of the electrical compartment in a convenient location somewhere.
