I know it's not the best thing to do
but those little critters got into my tool box one winter tore all the felt from the drawers and made themselves a nice warm bed,
plus they don't have good bathroom habits they made some of my tools rust.

we have mice, and i hate them. we use the life trap tube things here, and they do work. i do the same thing and take them way out back and release them. but it got so bad here that i started the good old fashion snap traps. since i started that i haven't seen any around. but it is getting to be that time of year when they come in, so i need to stock up again.

our cat does a good job when he is in the house, but he really like outside better. the inside cat doesn't seem to be a good mouser.

Never worked for us when i was a kid on the farm...cats were just too lazy!

Our dog did all the mousing for us...we think he was part black lab, part st. bernard. Used to see him catching mice all the time. When we were getting the corn dryers & elevator leg ready for harvest in the fall, he'd hang a little closer to us, 'cause he KNEW a nice, tasty rat was gonna fall from the sky shortly.

He was never disappointed, either, that I can remember.

OK..... I tried the search function; but it wasn't much help (or my search was too general). So, I'm going to throw this out to the hive mind of the group and hope to get the right answer.

After showing my designs to "she who camps with me" and trying to incorporate all the amenities that she would like, she tossed a new wrinkle into the whole foamie idea (at least for me).

Very innocently this weekend while we were out camping she asked "Does foam have formaldehyde in it? I have asthma induced by exposure to formaldehyde."

I'm still hooked on the idea of a foamie. I just need to figure out what to do to deal with formaldehyde fumes if it is going to be a problem.

Thoughts? Ideas? Facts?

I'm pretty sure no.

She may be thinking of maybe 10 to 15 years ago when they started doing the spray foam house insulation. It used a twp part foam that did give off formaldehyde.

Its not listed in this sticky about hazards.

This may shoot the whole Deal !!! :o http://www.healthiertalk.com/formaldehy ... -list-4252

Seems like encapsulating (skin) the foam really does make good sense , not only from a structural standpoint ... and probably with our limited exposure , not much of a worry ...

In my mind, encapsulating is probably the key. After all, there is formaldehyde in the glue used in plywood products and we all use those in our traditional builds. As long as you keep the outgassing to a minimum, it shouldn't be an issue (I hope).

"She who camps with me" and her sister both lived in manufactured homes/mobile homes/trailers (whatever you personally chose to call them) at one time or another. Both have developed asthma that they attribute to the formaldehyde in the cabinetry. Shades of Katrina FEMA trailers.

I'm not ready to give up on the idea yet. My mind just can't give up the weight and thrifty build benefits. Plus, this past weekend sleeping in a tent in upper 40 degree temps reminded me why I built Itty-Bitty in the first place (when I was still a single). We both don't fit in Itty-Bitty and no amount of snuggling was going to keep us truly comfortable in a tent. Fifty pounds of blankets and quilts is not the answer either.

 More research and modifications to interior finish plan before I get too far into it. Whichever way it goes, there is another light weight trailer build in my future. Big enough for two people and a maltese.
