Galley hatch storage ideas?

Postby driftwood » Thu Sep 29, 2011 8:10 pm

Searched the forums for similar topic, could not find anything so thought I would ask. Trying to create more storage in galley so lLooking for ideas on how to add some features that would allow me to store some kitchen utensils, plates, frying pan etc beneath/on the hatch. Mine is open where you can see the 2 inch thick wood ribbing, laid out where I have 2'x2' squares that I could store items in. How do you hold items in place when driving? Thought about hanging hooks and moving stuff from galley to the hooks when set up but want option to close hatch at night and not have to take everything down to close. Anyone got any ideas or pics?

On the design that I have drawn up, I will have a cabinet on the hatch that will nest into the area above the counter and in front of the upper galley cabinet when closed. I figure it can hold light items like towels, paper goods, chips and the like. Also, I wouldn't have to empty it when I close the hatch

I've seen 2 differnt ways that I liked on a couple of people from FL. One had cubby holesmade between the spars and then plexiglasshalf way across the cubby and small bungee cords across the top of the cubby. They had things like light melamine plates, plastic cups and small items stored there. The other one had small doors and locks over the cubby holes to keep the stuff locked in it. I plan on using one of the methods on mine for light stuff otherwise will make the hatch to heavy to lift up.

I personally like "nested" cookware. Tghis set here from GSI an example.

I have seen several different brands of nested cookware in a range of prices, but this type of setup just makes sense when you have limited storage space, plus with most of these setups the danger of breakage minimized.

If you're looking to store stuff that has an edge or lip that can be fastened under something, check out how I did my plates and bowls here:
Image

You can see the angled sticks on each side of the plates and bowls...they're rebated so that the lip of the plate/bowl is caught under the edge of the stick, and wedged in by the angle.

This would probably work quite well in a hatch, as it would be more vertical when traveling. I'd guess that you might have to put some kind of flat base behind it if your hatch skin has too much curvature, tho.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input gang. I am specifically looking for ways to store on the actual hatch cover itself, as Cliff referenced in his reply. Maybe some pics of those if any one has any? Cliff, I went to a FL gathering and think I saw the trailer you are talking about- lots of bungees on hooks or in holes. I wonder if there are storage nets available to purchase that can be fastened between my hatch lids- that might work.

Thanks Bob. From what I saw camping next to you at CRA you no longer have much concern for storage- you bring the whole house with you! Still mad that you baited you me with the promise of biscuits and gravy one morning but did not save me any....

But you did inspire me to buy my first dutch oven- tried it at the GA/AL gathering last weekend- yum!

It was Jimmy and Peggy tear that looks like a fish lure Drift, and I know they make nets that you can cut down to work.

I used the hatch for several purposes.

Image
here is another shot of the self leveling shelf. It is used primarily to keep the spices and flour sugar coffee and tea within reach.

Image
here is the wine glass rack and the paper towel dispenser.

This thread has me thinking a few coat hooks and you can have a place for dish towels and hot pads at the ready while setup I don't think that qualifies as storage but they would be at the ready when camping. Maybe a pot and pan hanging rack

How many other ideas can we dream up ????

The one concern I would have about the idea of hanging stuff on the galley lid is the potential for making the door too heavy to lift. I've got nothing but a paper towel holder hanging from my galley door and it still takes two hands to lift the door.

If you are using gas shocks to help assist with the weight, I suppose the problem would be minimized somewhat.

Of all the pictures I glanced at in this post, the one I like the best is the long tray that looks like a toolbox with a pvc handle. That is pretty cool. Maybe something like that could be rigged up to be removable. Once you open the hatch, you can hang stuff. . .
