RE: Formaldehyde Free Building Materials

Postby mezmo » Tue Oct 04, 2011 1:04 am

Hi tinksdad,

I too share the formaldehyde allergy. I can't be in the new RV/MFGD
Homes. Instant headache. breathing problems etc. These modern building
materials are the culprit. I once went to a New Homes Parade of
expensive site built traditional homes [$300K+] and they were the
same! By the second I home toured, I had a spontaneous nosebleed and
had to stop and get outside and had to leave. It is a real genuine
problem.

Fortunately there are alternatives. Just Google 'formaldehyde-free' in
front of whatever you're looking for. E.G., doing that with plywood got
me this:

http://columbiaforestproducts.com/

It is U.S. made. It may be more expensive, but health is worth it.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Hey again all.

While looking for an explanation of Vinyl spackling as I had never heard of it before Mike used it to fill in kerf holes in his standy I ran into this.

Foam in a can

Looks like another version of "Great Stuff" anybody ever used this, opinions, yeah/nay?

While on the subject... I used some of the vinyl spackling this weekend to fill in the grooves in the roof on the foamie. (Picture coming later this week).

Anyways, I noticed that it acts exactly like drywall spackling when spreading it. And it dries and shrinks the same way too.

Mike...

I was wondering how drywall mud would be as a fairing compound. I bought a small pail of it for another job that'll use only a bit so I'll have some leftovers to play with. It would definitely need to be sealed, but since I'm using epoxy it would be cheaper than epoxy and microballoons for fairing.

I also ran across some polyester drywall tape so I grabbed a roll - the texture is pretty close to that of fiberglass mat. It wet out really well with epoxy - I used it to provide some bulk for a flat panel that I want to use for breakers and a voltmeter.
Given GPW's good results with gluing fiberglass tape, I think it would work fine for builders using glue, it's a whole lot cheaper than glass tape, you can tear it by hand and feather the ends together seamlessly.

ok, you will not believe this, but i checked every store in disney for the mickey head string lights, and they just do not have them. just now, while browsing thru the store online, i found them! so i ordered 2 sets. i hope they arrive in time for our last camp out in the foamie. i so can't wait to put them up at the site.

i am going to redue just about everything on the foamie this winter/spring and turn it into a mickey mobile.

i will make my foamie cute (in my eyes) if its the last thing i do! 8)

That's a good thought, GPW...I hadn't thought about the mud cracking as the trailer rattled down the road. Mine's been sitting so long now that's hardly a problem - if it wasn't sitting on a gravel pad, the morning glory and salal would have claimed it by now !

no, they were no where to be found. some of the cm's even called around to try and find them. but they were told they have sold them in the past, but not this year.

i just have to come up with a few bucks now to get to the fabric store so i can finish the inside of the tear. hmm, maybe this weekend.

Is he thinking about making some buildings in New Orleans that can float?

Sorry, I can't help myself.
