Torsion Axle (2 halves) mounting question

Postby CARS » Tue Oct 04, 2011 11:12 am

I am looking at these: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200335738

After reading the Q&A they are described as mounting the same way as the picture shows. Great! I want a drop axle. But...

I've never seen axles mount with the brackets on the bottom. To me, the axles should be flipped over so the mounts bolt directly under the frame.

To mount it the way they are shown would require 2 crossmembers set along side each axle tube.

Are they describing this right? Kinda screws up my plans to use 2"x2" tubing for the frame. The box on the axles are 2.5"...

Anyone have a picture of these on their frame???

You are absolutely right - they have photographed those upside-down (I bet because that's the only way the photographer could get them to stand up...).

Here in Britain, half-axles are the normal suspension for light trailers and I suggest the following mounting method:
1) Cut out some mounting plates that same size and thickness as the 'base plate' of the suspension unit.
2) Drill the bolt holes and bolt the loose plates to the suspension units.
3) Clamp the suspension units to a strong straight-edge at the right spacing/track - a straight 4x2 is ideal, but a piece of square/rectangular tube is better.
4) Offer up the 'axle' you've made to the trailer frame and tack weld your mounting plates to the trailer cross-member.
5) Unbolt the suspension units and fully weld the mounting plates to the cross-member (avoids welding heat getting near the rubber).
6) Bolt the units back on and you're ready to go.

Thanks for the reply!

Your description of installation is what I needed to hear.
