Idea for an interesting tongue box!

Postby CliffinGA » Mon Oct 03, 2011 9:46 pm

Not sure if been done before but saw a pic of Grants tear and the Coleman ice chest he had on the tongue and I thought why not find an old metal cooler and make into the tongue box or batter box. Any comments or better ideas?

Saw a guy at Mpuntain Center gathering doing just that but is using the cooler to hide his air conditioner on his small canned ham.

I have an old metal cooler I don't think it is big enough to hold much maybe a battery would fit thanks for the suggestion.

I think an old Coleman cooler would make a "cool" battery box!

I have an old cooler for my battery.

It started out, "Honey, do you remember that cooler you have been bought ??"

I just saw a rusted out metal cooler in the junk yard last week. Looked good until I saw the bottom. Perfect candidate. I've seen dozens of them at auctions over the years with holes in the bottom.

Sounds like a great idea Cliff!

I want to use an empty keg and cut it open down the side to use as a tongue box on my new build. Weatherproofing it will be the hardest part though.

I mounted the newly repainted old style cooler on the tongue for a tongue box. made a rather clever mount out of 2 pieces of 15" 2x2 angle left over from the side rails cut off of the barn's frame rails. As with so many of these old style domed top coolers the top was cruched enough that The bail handle would not clamp the lid tightly so I went looking and found the hand grip cushion from the crutches I had use as table supports. I removed the bail and slid on the cushion. After building up the diameter of the bail with some ice dam tape I centered the cushion and it compresses just right and clamps the lid solid. Now you know why I never throw anything away !

Ah, look what I have on the tongue of my teardrop. I also use it to hold up my solar panel. ;)

Thinking about using this flea market wonder for our tongue box. It's tall and skinny, which may work with our super-short tongue. Bought it for five bucks last fall, and it's just collecting dust.

The cooler tongue boxes are great ideas. How would you lock it for security?

that is a nifty idea, using coolers as tongue boxes. the only problem i see however, is those that camp in bear country. i know here we have to keep all coolers inside the vehicle or in a bear proof box.
