Bending .100 thick aluminum for front radius?

Postby exminnesotaboy » Wed Oct 05, 2011 8:40 am

I am looking at building a slightly wider than 5' tear. In my area, I can get 6' wide aluminum only in .100 thickness, but not sure how easy it will take the large front radius bend of a traditional tear. Does anyone have experience with this thickness?
Thanx in advance

10 gauge aluminum (0.1019") is pretty thick, you won't be able to bend it by hand so you'll need to find a fab shop. Look around more, there has to be another source for sheet aluminum or someone can special order a sheet for you.

Seems like you're accepting "defeat" on getting what you need. These guys were great when I bought .040. They have a location in Mo.

I think you'd do better off to get thinner material. Given the price is by the pound you're spending about 2.5 times more than you need to.

There is a price break at 100# so it was cheaper for me to buy 5 sheets than 4! Crazy but true.

Cheers,

Gus

You might check with tractor trailer repair shops and sign companies. They usually have the wide stuff in stock.

Happy hunting,

Kinda what thought, too thick to bend, even with the big radius.

Defeat is hardly the direction I am heading. My first tear had .032 and I was hoping to use .040 on this one. Thank for the link, but the distance is a little far for me (4 hours) to justify at this time.

They can deliver. Call and see what they can do.

Didn't mean to offend with the "defeat" comment, maybe "compromise" would have been a better term.

Cheer,

Gus

No worries, Gus. It takes a lot to offend me :)

Looks like a trailer repair shop is my next stop! Thanks for the feedback folks - see you 'round the campfire...
