Mystery Package

Postby nrody » Thu Oct 06, 2011 10:45 pm

OMG. Last January when I was just at the beginning of my teardrop restoration I was in search for windows for the Bean. I looked high and low and all over the internet on cl and flebay. I actually dismantled a old rv to get to the windows, alas they did not work out. Finally I found a small window that would work for what I had in mind from a shed manufacture. I placed the order and had my tracking number. Checked with the brown truck tracking and it was indicated that at 1145 am on a friday it was delivered. By the time I got home the package had disappeared or something? The supplier refunded my account as I never received the package.
Low and behold when I arrived home yesterday, 10 months after I placed the order and the brown truck folks swore it was delivered the package miraculously appeared at my doorstop. No packing slip just the brown truck label with a date of 01/11 in micro script and the window I ordered inside.
A very odd day indeed!

...more like it was in the last container that the shift had to unload and got forgotten. The container is put in to slow rotation or storage for a few months. Business picks up, the container gets used and the piece finally gets unloaded and put in to the system. That's what happens when you hire humans.

Behind Door #3...

Postby Engineer Guy » Fri Oct 07, 2011 2:05 pm

'Mightydog' is on it, I suspect... His explanation, given the Time Line, makes sense.

I used to book my own Int'l Flights for Tech Biz to enjoy schedule 'control', and to often save the Company lotsa Moolah. I'd book what was the 'new' nonstop Denver -> Frankfurt Flight, and then book Regional Air or Train connections in/out of that 'gateway' City.

So, I book some intra-Europe Flights separately myself and have the Tickets shipped to me in 'plenty' of time. However, they get delivered 5 Doors up to an address identical to ours, save the 3 numbers being rearranged. A HS Kid there signs for it, thinking they're for his Dad. The Parcel/Letter Company can even show me his illegible scratch Signature captured electronically. Nothing even close to my name.

The Family is of a 'clandestine' Religion, and they never open their Doors. They're Neighborhood 'outcasts' socially. I knock, they never answer. The Kid fears Dad, who beats him. That's why he signed for the Air Tickets automatically w/o checking address details. Spare the Rod and all that... I leave Notes on their Door, etc..

Finally, he sheepishly delivered me my Air Tickets the day before I flew out. 'Twas a close one, and certainly was a weird one...

I for one think, it was picked up from your house by aliens,
they could have been the one's GPW saw
he may have seen them when they were returning to their home planet
after delivering window to your house.

Package

Postby nrody » Fri Oct 07, 2011 3:24 pm

Ok I have found the address of the company and put a check in the mail.
I can't explain it but stuff happens.
Now if I want to use the window I will have to undo some of the work that has been done over the summer. Oh what to do! Guess this weekend I will see if it will work where I intended.

If it didn't have any label or anything from the sender I'm going to assume that something happened to the box it was in. It was ripped open, damaged, etc and someone just found the contents with no label or packing slip.

It got put somewhere and somehow someone found it and somehow linked it to your shipment.

They put it in one of their boxes with their label on it and delivered it.

I would contact the shipper before you send a check. UPS or their insurance agent probably reimbursed them already. If that's the case UPS probably owns them and I would guess doesn't want them back.

I'm not exactly sure then what the right thing to do is.

ETA: OK I see you already sent a check I hope they really wanted it. Like I said the case is probably closed and they may not want the money. It may already be closed on their books and now they have no place to put the check. Depending on how big they are, you may have created a huge accounting hassle for them. Or they may just cash it and buy some beer.

The company got their money from UPS, I'm sure. Now, I wonder if they will send the check to UPS.

Ordered from Land's End this past week and was hoping for UPS delivery on Thursday before we left Thursday evening for Louisiana. Was really worried about that package sitting on my doorstep for three days.
Checked the on-line tracking info and noticed the words: at USPS for Friday delivery. What the heck? Called Lands End: UPS now takes the order, delivers it to your post office, and your regular mail man delivers it to you! Next, went online to the USPS Web page, held all mail until Monday and all is well. Don't know if this is standard on all deliveries or just something specific to Land's End, but it let me have more control over the delivery. A second benefit (if you have some bad elements in your neighborhood) is no one sees the UPS truck drive up and leave a package on your doorstep.
Worked perfectly for me in this instance.
