Axle Slips in U-Bolts

I'm having an interesting problem. I've been rebuilding a canned ham, and I replaced the original axle with an axle with brakes installed.

For the record, it's this U-bolt kit and this axle. I tried asking them directly, but they wouldn't write me back.

The problem I'm running into is that when I brake, the wheels stop, but the axle spins in the U-bolts. Not a lot, but enough to wrap the wiring around the axle and disconnect it the first time I brake hard.

I'm not sure if this is a situation where I simply need to apply more torque, or if I made a fundamental installation mistake.

It looks as if the spring perches aren't welded to the axle to keep it from giving you axle wrap.

Yup. They need to be welded to the axles.

Ditto with above two posts....

Loosen up u-bolts and realign axle to where it is supposed to be, and go by a welding shop and have them run a bead joining bracket to axle tube...

Saw the same thing too - weld em' up and you'll be fine to go
